The wait was worth it for Manhattan fans on Wednesday night at Draddy Gymnasium. The Jaspers survived their season-opener against St. Francis Brooklyn, 80-79, in overtime. Continue reading “Manhattan Survives Season-Opener In Overtime”
NEC Weekly Recap – Getting Through the Guarentee Games
As difficult as it is to project the Northeast Conference (NEC) in the preseason, it’s nearly as difficult to break down a small sample of games within the first week of the season. How exactly do you decipher what is and isn’t meaningful? Continue reading “NEC Weekly Recap – Getting Through the Guarentee Games”
LIU Brooklyn 68, Fordham 81: Three Thoughts
On a cool late autumn, Monday evening in the Bronx, LIU Brooklyn and Fordham matched up in a battle of 0-1 teams looking for that first early season victory. LIU Brooklyn was coming off their high-scoring 102-96 loss to Tulane on Friday night while Fordham lost a one-point heartbreaker at home to Miami (OH) that same night.
It was a different story for both teams Monday night as Fordham got up ahead 14-4 to start the game and shot the ball extremely well while frustrating LIU on the offensive end and essentially cruised to an 81-68 wire-to-wire victory over the Blackbirds to go to 1-1 while dropping LIU to 0-2 on the young season. Ivy League Weekly Roundup: A Nightmare Start
This is a pretty depressing week to have an Ivy League Weekly Roundup column. We entered the preseason with hopes of a multi-team title race, star power throughout the conference, and realistic chances for quality wins. But on the first day of basketball, the league lost three potential All-Ivy candidates — one indefinitely, one for the season, and one for good. That set the stage for a weekend in which the Ancient Eight nearly went winless in D-I play, an inauspicious start to the season.
The Ivy League isn’t alone. Friday’s top games nationally were Texas A&M-West Virginia, which had two key players suspended, and Georgia Tech-UCLA, which was overshadowed by alleged NCAA violations, LaVar Ball and Louis Vuitton. The biggest college basketball story throughout the season will be an FBI investigation. Sports are never just about actual sports, but it feels especially so right now. NJIT Health And Wellness Center Open For Business
The looks on the NJIT students’ faces as they entered the brand new Health and Wellness Center told you all you needed to know Saturday night.
A mixture of “Wow”, “This is ours?”, “Unbelievable”, and good-old silent mouths agape were heard and seen as nearly 3,000 entered, approximately a third of those students. To understand the present (and future) of why the $110-million facility is so staggering and important for NJIT, you have to start in the past.
Disrespecting the deceased is never a good look, but now that it’s gone I think we can all say that NJIT’s Fleisher Center was, well, inadequate for a Division I team. Or possibly your local varsity high school squad.

Holy Cross 69, Sacred Heart 64: Three Thoughts
Good news: Sacred Heart was able to secure a home game for its opener Friday night.
Bad news: It was against Bill Carmody and Holy Cross, a veritable nightmare to prepare for in the first hurdle out of the gate, especially on the offensive end, where the Pioneers were sure to see a seemingly indefatigable variation of purple jerseys in front of them, changing with each possession.

NYC Buckets NEC Fantasy Draft Results
Last night, prior to the start of the college basketball season today, we conducted our fifth annual NEC fantasy draft. The NEC league is a favorite of our NYC Buckets writers. Ryan Peters is the defending champion. It’s a head-to-head weekly league that this season scores players in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, three-pointers, and free throws.
