Three Thoughts: Yale 99, Sacred Heart 77

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Anthony Latina was a little frustrated his team couldn’t have done a little better Monday night, but he knew that going up against a frontcourt like Yale was going to be difficult for his undersized team anyway. And without the injured Tevin Falzon and Matej Buovac – two players expected to play major minutes for the Pioneers – it was always going to be an uphill battle.

You throw in the new freedom of movement rules, and Yale (2-0) had an offensive bonanza, posted 1.34 points per possession (unofficially, its highest since a win at Dartmouth in 2008) and posting its highest point total against a Division I opponent in 13 years (incidentally, Yale lost that game 114-102 at George Washington) at Lee Amphitheater.

All Latina could do was tip his proverbial cap.

Way Too Early NEC All-Conference Teams

As the NEC writer for the upcoming Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, I’ve started my deep analysis for each individual program. I still have several coaches to speak with throughout the summer, but I wanted to convey my current thoughts on the conference’s returning individual talent. Because 10 of 15 players have graduated or transferred from last year’s Big Apple Buckets all-NEC teams, this Way Too Early exercise would surely garner a ton of differing opinions. Three Thoughts: St. Francis Brooklyn 71, Sacred Heart 62

Perhaps the only thing with more of a consensus in the NEC than Jalen Cannon winning Player of the Year is Glenn Braica being the guy fellow coaches would love to see win if they can’t. But even Braica – one of the best guys in college basketball – can sometimes reach, maybe not a breaking point, let’s call it a bending point. Three Thoughts: Yale 70, Sacred Heart 64

I’ve (pretty much unsuccessfully) tried to start the #RoadGamesAreHard hashtag this season, so I should have been less surprised than most to see Yale struggle to put away Sacred Heart Tuesday afternoon. They finally did 70-64 to go to 10-4 on the season, but it wasn’t pretty to watch, with 20 turnovers (in 64 possessions) and a spirited rally from an improved Pioneer team late.

Three Thoughts: Sacred Heart 73, New Hampshire 60

Sacred Heart was 5-26 last season, and quite frankly had very little going for them in Anthony Latina’s first campaign, finishing 273rd in the nation in adjusted offense and even worse (297th) on defense. What does a young coach do after a season like that? Think a lot, first of all. And second, go to work.

“We have been a really bad defensive team for a long time here,” Latina said. “One way to improve is to improve your talent, which we think we’ve done, adding some good players. The other thing is that we have to play defense. We looked at a team like Virginia, who wins without the best talent in their league, they just defend really well, so we tried to model what we’re trying to do after what they did.”
