Columbia is 3-4 in its first seven games under Jim Engles. Considering the Lions are now in a stretch where they will play just three games in nearly four weeks, it gives us an excellent moment to step back and take stock of what has happened this season in Morningside Heights. Three Thoughts: Quinnipiac 77, Marist 63
There are no “must-win” games on Dec. 4 in college basketball, especially if you’re in a one-bid league. But Sunday’s home game against Marist might have been a “really want” contest for Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats came in at 1-5, and although they had played an extremely difficult schedule, three of those defeats came at home. After several years of contending, both in the NEC and MAAC, Quinnipiac suffered through a miserable 9-21 campaign in 2015-16, a campaign where even their ninth straight season of ranking in the top 10 nationally couldn’t save them.
Three Thoughts: Siena 80, Fairfield 73
After a Tyler Nelson layup cut Siena’s lead to 9-8 over Fairfield in its MAAC opener Saturday night, the Saints showed what they are capable of in the next five minutes: Nico Clareth was drilling three-pointers, Marquis Wright was finding Javion Ogunyemi for dunks, Lavon Long slashed to the rim on the next possession, when the Stags played off Wright he hit a jumper.
Meanwhile, at the other end, Brett Bisping was getting steals and rebounds, Fairfield’s guards could not get anywhere near the paint against Wright and Long, and by the time everyone looked up, Siena led 27-8 and was well on its way to a comfortable victory.

Three Thoughts: Bryant 79, Yale 70 – Ndugba Doesn’t Need Redemption
On the scatterplot of Division I head basketball coaches, Bryant’s Tim O’Shea slides toward the upper end of both the laid-back and positivity metrics, so it shouldn’t be that surprising that he was able to brush off Monday’s unfortunate mistake by freshman Ikenna Ndugba that contributes to a tough 91-90 loss at Brown Monday night.
It’s likely that a Google search of Ndugba’s name will turn up the incident for the rest of his college career at least, as it made the rounds to SportsCenter and local television around the country. But for O’Shea, the discussion about it afterward lasted about three seconds, and publicity is publicity, right?
