Manhattan and Steve Masiello almost went at Saturday night’s semifinal of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off as an exhibition game, rotating players in and out almost from the opening tip, and to be fair to him, the Jaspers were never really in any trouble, although they showed some sluggish periods in the 78-63 win, their first of the season. Three Thoughts: Iona 85, Wake Forest 81
Iona just finished off Wake Forest, 85-81 in Winston-Salem, NC. The game wasn’t exactly pretty, but the Gaels did earn a victory over an ACC squad on their home court. Continue reading “Three Thoughts: Iona 85, Wake Forest 81”
Three Thoughts: Wofford 54, Fairfield 36
Fairfield went nearly 17 minutes without a field goal at the end of the first half and the first 13 minutes of the second, and that, friends, is never good. The end result was an ugly 54-36 to Wofford to open the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Webster Bank Arena Friday night.
Quite frankly, the 36 flattered Fairfield, who took 30 minutes to get to 20 and at one point were 4-of-32 from the floor. But at least they don’t have to sit around and stew over it; the Stags will play twice more this weekend (against Sam Houston St. and South Dakota in quite the diverse exempt tournament).

A Little Confidence Pushes La Salle Past Quinnipiac
Quinnipiac head coach Tom Moore said afterward he would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the La Salle huddle to see what Dr. John Giannini did to keep his team upbeat even when they were going through a hideous offensive night, trailing by double digits six minutes into the second half Tuesday night at the TD Bank Center. BLOBs and SLOBs and A Tough Manhattan Loss
In coach-speak, they’re called BLOBs and SLOBs for baseline out of bounds plays and sideline out of bounds plays, respectively, and most coaches agree that they don’t spend enough time practicing them, while players are nearly unanimous that they work on them too much because if they wanted to run through plays over and over, they just would have played football.

MAAC Stock Watch: Nov. 17
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference went 4-9 in the season’s first three days, but there are plenty of bright spots, even in losses for some teams.
Hartford, Saint Peter’s Struggle with Expectations Early
With great expectations comes great pressure. Or something like that.
It’s hard to call the expectations Saint Peter’s and Hartford “great” this season, but maybe “greater” might do the trick. And while Hartford escaped with a 51-50 victory at the Chase Family Center Sunday afternoon, neither team left the opening weekend brimming with confidence. Three Thoughts: Iona 78, Cleveland State 73
Tim Cluess must have had a pit in his stomach, that sinking feeling of deja vu creeping up his spine with the looming specter of losing a season opener to the same team for a second straight year.
