If you were just watching who comes in and out of an Army basketball game you might think that you accidentally went to the wrong arena. Complete line changes make it seems like a hockey game has broken out. The Black Knights’ Zach Spiker has a 12-man rotation and it’s not uncommon to see five new players take the court at once. Random Thoughts on the NEC, Patriot League
It wasn’t ideal, yet I spent a majority of my Wednesday evening inside an Annapolis Panera (it’s a long story) on my IPad catching up on action around the NEC and Patriot League. With that, allow me to throw out some random thoughts regarding four schools. For what it’s worth, all four programs were in the bottom three of their respective power rankings, so there’s really nowhere to go but up. Columbia 81, Army 64
Columbia built an 12-point halftime lead and coasted to an 81-64 victory over Army at Levien Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The win brings the Lions above .500 overall at 5-4 on the season. They’ll be put to the test though on Saturday at Bucknell. Continue reading “Columbia 81, Army 64”

Re-calibrating Our Preseason Predictions
The season is merely two weeks old, yet we know far more about some teams then we did back in October. Informed prognostication certainly has its value, but the stark truth is no one – including most coaching staffs – knows how Team A will respond outside the confines of its practice court. It’s nearly impossible to predict how newcomers will adjust to a new environment.
Analyzing Dan Hanner’s Patriot League Projections
Yesterday, Big Apple Buckets’ own John Templon had an informative Q&A with Dan Hanner on his 2013-14 college basketball projections based on his highly respected projection model. Despite the interesting 3,000-word exchange between Templon and Hanner, I decided to delve into the Patriot League projections myself. Big Apple Buckets Patriot League All-Conference Team Picks
Some tremendous talent has graduated from the Patriot League – Mike Muscala, C.J. McCollum, Ella Ellis, just to name a few greats – opening up opportunities for veterans to grab spots for the 2013-14 all-conference teams. After Boston University, the prohibitive favorite among people who know the league, the Patriot League is as wide open as ever. Patriot League All-Rookie Selection Kyle Toth Leaves Army

Last season, Zach Spiker’s Army Black Knights (16-15, 8-6 Patriot League) solidified their first winning season since the 1984-85 campaign when they defeated American in the first round of the Patriot League tournament. Continue reading “Patriot League All-Rookie Selection Kyle Toth Leaves Army”
Patriot League All-Conference Teams: The Way Too Early Edition
This upcoming season, Big Apple Buckets looks to expand our mid-major basketball coverage to the Patriot League. With three schools now within a 40 minute drive of my home in Maryland, it would be foolish of me not to cover the league! I kept tabs last season, especially at nearby Navy and American, but our website wasn’t fully invested in what has turned into a solid mid-major basketball conference.
