After Iona’s 65-52 win over Niagara, head coach Tim Cluess confirmed that they will be without sophomore guard Schadrac Casimir for the rest of the 2015-16 season.
The 5’10” guard appeared in four games on the year, averaged 6.3 ppg, but will be able to take a medical redshirt due to the injury. He will return with three years of eligibility starting in the 2016-17 season.
Cluess confirmed after the game that Casimir had surgery Monday morning on his hip and that a combination of a torn labrum in his hips as well as a sports hernia are what contributed to his absence.
“We really don’t know when it all started,” Cluess said. “It effected him throughout the season.”
Casimir sought a second opinion on his injuries as recently as last Friday and was told the best route would be surgery.
“This one was on his hip,” Cluess said of his surgery on Monday. “He’s got to have a couple of procedures done.”
The 5’10” guard averaged 15.4 ppg shot a MAAC-best 43.8% three-point field goal percentage and won MAAC Rookie of the Year after being picked unanimously to the All-Rookie team. This preseason Casimir became the first sophomore since Derek Needham to be named First Team All-MAAC in the preseason.
Iona is undefeated in the MAAC and hosts Rider on Thursday night.
