What do similarity scores say about the top seeds?
When picking a bracket everyone wants to know how good the top seeds are. Which ones should make the Final Four? Go even further? Right now the standard answer seems to be Kentucky. What team though is the one you shouldn’t trust? I used similarity scores to try and determine both the strongest and weakest of the top eight seeds in the tournament this season.

Similarity Scores for Random Teams
While I had the similarity scores loaded I wanted to run them for a few other teams. I’ll cover in the NEC teams in this space next week. Instead I ran the numbers for a few random teams that are of particular interest this season: Syracuse, Murray State, Harvard, Oral Roberts and Georgia State. The Orange and Racers are undefeated at the moment. Harvard is the favorite in the Ivy League and ORU and GSU came from the “Ask the Audience” segment on Twitter. Check out all of those teams’ Top 5 comparisons. (All data through January 17.)
Big East Projection: The big Orange crush
Big East play opens on Tuesday with Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh and Providence vs. St. John’s. Therefore there’s no better time to start running random simulations in order to figure out what teams have a legitimate shot at winning the conference title and which teams are going to have to watch their backs in order to avoid a winless season.

Saturday Round Up
Be sure to check out my recap of the Princeton-Wagner game below, but there were four other games involving area teams yesterday, including three against Big East teams. St. Francis (NY) came oh so close to scoring the first major upset of the season, but fell 75-71 in overtime to Seton Hall last night.
