With Zaid Hearst Leading The Way, Here Comes Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac senior Zaid Hearst goes for a layup against Manhattan

For all intents and purposes, the game was over. Quinnipiac led by double digits and time was not only a factor, it precluded a Manhattan comeback with only 90 seconds left.

But as Manhattan sharpshooter Shane Richards ran off screens, Zaid Hearst was still with him every step of the way, just as he had been for the first 38 minutes of the game. Richards finally got one last good look when Hearst decided to switch with James Ford, but it rimmed out and Richards – who had scored 22, 21, and 21 in his last three games – put up a goose egg as Quinnipiac climbed back to .500 in the MAAC with an impressive 73-59 national television victory at the TD Bank Center Friday night.

Another Day, Another OT In The MAAC As Rider Edges Manhattan

In perhaps the meta moment of the wacky 2014-15 MAAC season thus far, Manhattan coach Steve Masiello perhaps explained perfectly why he shouldn’t be too angry after a tough 82-79 overtime loss to Rider Sunday at Draddy Gym … while being extremely angry about a home loss that would have seen his Jaspers (8-9, 5-3) be tied atop the conference standings as we near the halfway point. Manhattan Stumbles Again At Fairfield

At the very least, Friday night probably spells the end for Steve Masiello’s red suit jacket.

The normally impeccably dressed Masiello will seemingly try anything these days to change his team’s luck, especially after losing on a 75-foot shot last week at George Mason, even donning a checkered red suit jacket that he previously wore at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off dinner two weeks ago.

But in the MAAC opener, it was previously offensively challenged Fairfield that exploded in the second half and left the Jaspers at 1-5 (and more importantly 0-1 in the MAAC) with a surprisingly comfortably 67-54 win at Webster Bank Arena.

Three Thoughts: Manhattan 78, Binghamton 63

Manhattan and Steve Masiello almost went at Saturday night’s semifinal of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off as an exhibition game, rotating players in and out almost from the opening tip, and to be fair to him, the Jaspers were never really in any trouble, although they showed some sluggish periods in the 78-63 win, their first of the season. BLOBs and SLOBs and A Tough Manhattan Loss

In coach-speak, they’re called BLOBs and SLOBs for baseline out of bounds plays and sideline out of bounds plays, respectively, and most coaches agree that they don’t spend enough time practicing them, while players are nearly unanimous that they work on them too much because if they wanted to run through plays over and over, they just would have played football.
