Papale’s Three-Pointer Foils Quinnipiac Again

Boston University and Quinnipiac may not seem like natural basketball rivals, but their non-conference series has been plenty entertaining. Their prior four meetings all went down to the wire, and in each of the last two, a late three-pointer propelled the Terriers to victory. So in the waning seconds of Sunday’s tie game, when John Papale rose from the top of the arc — the same spot as his overtime-forcing trey two years ago and D.J. Irving’s game-winning shot last year — it was no surprise that the ball hit nothing but nylon, giving the BU another dramatic 71-68 win. Boston University 69, Quinnipiac 66

Each of the four previous meetings between Boston University and Quinnipiac had been decided by a margin of fewer than seven points, and Monday evening’s contest followed suit. In a back and forth affair which saw 13 ties and 12 lead changes, the score was knotted at 66 with 0:17 to play when D.J. Irving dribbled down the court and hit a 3-point jumper with just three seconds remaining to lift the Terriers over the Bobcats 69-66 at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, CT.
