WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Thunderous boos from a packed Monmouth University student section greeted the Iona College men’s basketball team as it took the floor Friday night at the Multipurpose Activity Center on the Monmouth campus. Continue reading “Early Runs Boosts Iona Past Monmouth”
Princeton 75, Yale 63: In Search Of Jack Montague
PRINCETON, N.J. – Upon arrival at Dartmouth’s Leede Arena last Friday night, always helpful Yale Sports Information contact Tim Bennett came over to inform me that Jack Montague was not with the team for the weekend for “personal reasons”. I asked a couple of cursory questions, but that was it.
Odd, I thought. Montague had started 52 straight games and was the captain, a big deal at Yale, which only chooses one for each sport (and has a long history of doing so), meaning that Montague beat out Justin Sears for the coveted position. Personally, I had gotten to know him a bit over the last three years and before the Bulldogs went to Australia for the summer, chatted with him at length about his summer trip to Croatia and Serbia for his history class (secretly, I’m a history nerd when not chasing college basketball games in the winter).

Howie Dickenman Not Going Out Winner, But An NEC Legend
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – We all know that “nice guys finish last”, and the nicest guy in the NEC will likely finish his career at the bottom of the conference standings, although with three games to go, Howie Dickenman’s squad is playing its best basketball. Thursday night, his Central Connecticut squad led the entire second half in a 76-72 win over Mount St. Mary’s at Detrick Gym.
Dickenman made official Thursday following the game what was already common knowledge thanks to sources and social media, his 20th season in charge of CCSU basketball would be the 69-year-old’s final one. It was typical Dickenman that he was slightly annoyed that word of his retirement leaked out before he could make it official, technology and social media are not really his thing.

Ivy League Midseason Breakdown
We’re at the halfway point of Ivy League play, with each team having played seven or eight games. How did each team get there? Find out below. Continue reading “Ivy League Midseason Breakdown”
Albany Ends Stony Brook Streak, Fires Psychological Shot
ALBANY, N.Y. – There were two pieces of positive news for Stony Brook as its bus headed back to Long Island Wednesday night. First, the calendar clearly says February. And second, the Seawolves won’t have to return to SEFCU Arena until 2017.
Other than that there was little to be cheerful about for Stony Brook, who saw its 18-game winning streak (the nation’s longest by six games) come to a crashing halt, 82-70, before a thrilled sell-out crowd of 4,527 at SEFCU Arena.

Boston University 71, Colgate 68: Streaking Terriers Win Inside
Colgate’s smaller lineups were hot from three-point range, but Boston University was too big in the frontcourt Wednesday night. The Terriers’ forwards led them to a 71-68 victory at Case Gymnasium, their seventh straight win.

Junior Robinson: The Underrated Engine That Drives Mount St. Mary’s
On Tuesday alongside Martin Hermannsson, Junior Robinson earned the first NEC Player of the Week award of his collegiate career, and deservedly so. The 5’5 sophomore was excellent in two pivotal home wins over Sacred Heart and Saint Francis University last week, averaging 23.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg and 3.5 apg while shooting 48.3% from the floor.
