David Laury scored 30 points for the first time in his career and Isaiah Williams followed with 27 as the Gael duo each posted career highs to help Iona erase a 15 point deficit in a 91-84 victory over Indiana State Saturday afternoon. Tempo-Free MAAC: December Weekend Edition
I meant to write this on Thursday, but you know, life and stuff got in the way. Now though the MAAC December weekend is finished and we’ve now got a robust (hah!) two-game sample size with which to judge every MAAC school. Did we learn anything? Three Thoughts: Holy Cross 76, NJIT 66
Out of context, it wasn’t a bad performance for NJIT in a 76-66 loss Friday night at Holy Cross. The Highlanders led for the entire first half and were within striking distance against a Crusader squad that was picked third in the Patriot League (and finished third last season), a conference that has had its share of NCAA success in the last decade, currently 19th in the KenPom ratings. That doesn’t sound like much, but, of course, NJIT is homeless, at least as far as conference affiliation is concerned, so good job, good effort. Really. Three Thoughts: Iona 77, Rider 64
On a night when Iona was without preseason player of the year David Laury, the Gaels dispelled some early concern following a loss at Monmouth by outrunning Rider in a 77-64 victory Wednesday evening. Continue reading “Three Thoughts: Iona 77, Rider 64”
St. John’s Improbably Impressive Defense
Judging by the spate of troubling news that afflicted St. John’s during the preseason, it was only natural to assume the Red Storm would again fail to reach the expectations set for the team since its core entered as freshmen four years ago.
Three Thoughts: Central Connecticut 65, UMBC 53
It ain’t easy being winless, and it’s even less so when your leading scorer is already done for the season.
UMBC coach Aki Thomas spent most of Wednesday night’s 65-53 loss to Central Connecticut cringing at crucial mistakes and stomping his foot after missed opportunities. But even though his Retrievers are one of four winless teams in Division I (of 351), Thomas was much more positive in the postgame, acknowledging that the America East is a one-bid conference anyway, so they just need to be producing in a few weeks when conference play begins. And UMBC was in the game for about 35 of the 40 minutes on the road.

Quick Thoughts As Kentucky Defeats Columbia, 56-46
Tonight Columbia went to Rupp Arena and played the No. 1 team in the country — a team some hot takes even have beating the Philadelphia 76ers… And Kentucky didn’t take the lead until 13:18 remained in the game, but eventually won 56-46. It was a gutsy effort from an incredibly game Lions squad and much kudos to Kyle Smith, who basically did everything he could to pull out what would’ve been the most improbable of victories.
