The opening of NEC and MAAC play on Thursday night meant that there were a lot of games played by NYC area schools, even if sometimes they were playing each other. St. Francis (NY), St. Peter’s and Long Island all came out winners for the evening.

Conference play starts early this week as a number of schools get their feet wet with a little action. The NEC opens play tonight with a full slate of six games pitting teams against conference opponents. The headliner is defending champion Long Island hosting Wagner. Here’s what you need to know about those six games.
Saturday was a busy day in college basketball. Besides Columbia’s win over Manhattan, full coverage of which you can find below, there were five other games on the schedule. Hofstra got the biggest win of the day, a 63-53 victory over Cleveland State, but there were some other good wins as well.
The battle of the boroughs was a pretty one-sided affair for the boys from Queens. St. John’s ran out to an early lead and had a comfortable working margin for the entire game against St. Francis (NY) before capturing the 63-48 victory. Area teams got the maximum numbers of wins they possibly could’ve on Saturday, since one was a head-to-head matchup, including Long Island’s first of the season. A little tempo-free analysis of each game is up next.
This week’s Saturday Game of the Week features two local teams, Hofstra and St. Francis (NY) battling it out on Long Island. The Pride are coming off a tough loss to Oregon State earlier in the week, but they started the season out by defeating Long Island. The Terriers have lost two close games by a combined 10 points, is this the game St. Francis finally gets over the hump?
The season has started and awards have started to be handed out. Congratulations to Manhattan’s Donovan Kates, who was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for his 10-point performance against NJIT, and Hofstra’s Nathaniel Lester, who was named the CAA Player of the Week after scoring 33 points against Long Island. Also, Travis Nichols, who was named the NEC’s Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for his 25-point, 14-rebound game in the overtime loss to Seton Hall on Saturday.
Be sure to check out my recap of the Princeton-Wagner game below, but there were four other games involving area teams yesterday, including three against Big East teams. St. Francis (NY) came oh so close to scoring the first major upset of the season, but fell 75-71 in overtime to Seton Hall last night. The NEC released its preseason coaches poll and Long Island was picked to repeat as conference champions. The Blackbirds received 10 of 12 first place votes, Robert Morris garnered the other two.
Long Island and St. Francis (NY) have a unique bond being in the same conference and the same borough. They’ll play the Battle of Brooklyn this season at LIU on Sunday, February 12, but the preceding game just got a whole lot more interesting. The Blackbirds and Terriers will play as the second half of a double-header at Madison Square Garden on February 8.
