You won’t find Great West predictions almost anywhere, not even in this awesome recap of media days by Ballin’ is a Habit, but you will here! The six-team league released its preseason coaches poll on Monday. And N.J.I.T. was picked third. How can this be?

Iona to get a lot of attention this season
ESPN released its entire slate of games for the 2011-12 college basketball season today. There are lots of games from the Big East, ACC, Big 12, etc. The typical tournaments are also there. But ESPN3.com especially has opened up a new door for mid-majors and a number of them are taking advantage. Iona is one team that will have a good deal of exposure this season, with a minimum of nine appearances on a variety of ESPN outlets. Get to know where you can find ESPN3 and ESPNU on your television, because all of the already scheduled games can be found there. The full list for the teams this site covers is after the jump.

Five nights – November
This week, as part of my preseason coverage, I’m going to take a look at some key games coming up in 2011-12. It just so happens that there are five months in the college basketball calendar, so this works out perfectly. While there are plenty awesome games in November at Madison Square Garden – the Champions Classic Nov. 15 and the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer on Nov. 17, here are some local mid-major games worth checking out.
New York Power Rankings – Preseason Edition
There are a bunch of teams in and around the New York City area. What better way to get a handle on them by putting them into your classic power ranking? Note: In order to be included in the power rankings a team’s campus has to be within a 65 mile radius of Manhattan according to Google Maps. That means that every team that plays Division I basketball in New Jersey is also included along with a few Connecticut teams. Let me know if you think I’ve missed anyone. From now on these will get updated every Wednesday and contain a little feature at the top instead of this boring explanatory blurb. Away we go…

Coming & Going N.J.I.T. – Searching for Garrett Frick
If the N.J.I.T. Highlanders are going to finish above .500 this season they’re going to need some talent to come in and provide solid minutes. One player who might be able to help out Jim Engles’ squad is soon to be 21-year-old, 6’7 freshman Garrett Frick.

Can NJIT top .500?
Over the past three seasons Jim Engles has taken NJIT from 1-30 to 10-21 to 15-15. Now with a schedule that includes 18 games against teams from the Great West, independents and outside of Division I it seems like this season is the time for the Highlanders to take the next step and finish with a winning record.
Great West a conference in transition
Where is the Great West going to go? That must be what the administrators of the conference that spans six different states across the entire country must be wondering at the moment. It’s a conference without a base, and thus without an identity and a will to stay together and survive.
Coaching Resumes on KenPom
Have you always wondered what makes a coach tick? How his scheme translates into tempo-free numbers? Well, now you can figure it out with one click of the mouse. Ken Pomeroy’s coaching resumes are the hot new thing in tempo-free college basketball.
Click on a profile and learn a lot about a coach. (Well at least the past 10 seasons of their career when they were a head coach.) Observations about each school’s head men coming up.
Maybe a 16 over 1 in the Fashion Brackets?
It’s April and the NCAA Tournament is over. Thus everyone is scrambling to put together some ridiculous bracket so that they can grab the attention of fans still craving simple one-and-done eliminations.
At CollegeInsider.com they’re capitalizing on it by putting out the Runway to the Fashion 4 bracket. It’s even got a blog where Virginia Tech’s Seth Greenberg can be found spouting some insider knowledge. (At least his team made this bracket!)

2011-12 season must be considered a success for Great West
This season the Great West Conference wasn’t the worst conference in college basketball according to Ken Pomeroy, no, that distinction fell to the SWAC. But this isn’t an opportunity to rag on small Division I conferences that don’t have many financial resources, rather, it’s an opportunity to look at the successes that the conference had this season as it tries to establish itself in college basketball circles.
The GWC was created for scheduling convenience, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Having seven members that you can schedule 12 home-and-home contests, even if it means flying from Newark, NJ to Orem, Utah, is a valuable commodity in college basketball circles. Unfortunately, as the Dakota schools move onwards, the conference is going to suffer. South Dakota will be joining the Summit League after the 2010-11 athletic schedule wraps up. The loss of the Coyotes means the loss of the program that won the original conference tournament and earned a bid to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Unfortunately the second team to win, North Dakota, will also be leaving in 2012 for the Big Sky Conference. The Fighting Sioux won the Great West Conference Tournament this season with a 77-76 double-overtime victory over South Dakota and went on to lose to Air Force in the first round of the CIT. The loss of these two teams in going to deal a big blow to the conference’s hopes of establishing a legitimate timeline for becoming an NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier and for developing respect around the nation.
