Monmouth: Started From The Bottom, Now They’re Here, MAAC

HAMDEN, Conn. – Set your neighborhood time machine to 2013 and the large crowd at the TD Bank Center for Quinnipiac and Monmouth on a January night in 2016 probably made some sense to you. After all, although they were never able to quite capture the NEC title, Quinnipiac was always right there and it seemed that the Bobcats’ impending move to the MAAC would only propel them to bigger and better things (and more consistent crowds).

Sure enough, a year later, Quinnipiac was doing just fine, thank you, in its new MAAC surroundings, still pummeling teams into submission, once 14-4 in the league before a late slide. Meanwhile, for King Rice and Monmouth things were, well, rough. Rice’s team hadn’t even qualified for the 2013 NEC Tournament and its 5-15 (and 11-21 overall) a year later mark might have even exceeded expectations for a program making an upward move with seemingly very little to work with.

Monmouth 66, Quinnipiac 51: Hawks Climbing The Hill

Monmouth knocked down another domino in their remarkable season with a 66-51 victory at Quinnipiac Thursday evening. Monmouth 86, Fairfield 74: Hawks Show Championship Credentials

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – After a lackluster first-half that saw his team down seven points, Monmouth coach King Rice stormed into the locker room and … calmly discussed what his team had to do better to win the game.

“The thing about this year’s team is when I even get a frowned up face it’s a negative reaction to my kids,” Rice said. “So I have to be a better coach and understand they don’t respond to that at all. When we came into the locker room, it was just, ‘Guys when we got after them defensively, those three-pointers didn’t go in. When you stand two feet off them like we were doing, that team will beat you badly because they’re comfortable.’ We weren’t guarding to our level. No yelling. We just needed to do a better job on defense.”
