Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello and the Jaspers drew up the perfect game plan, holding the lethal Gaels to under 70 points for just the fifth time this season. Ashton Pankey’s 21 point, 10 rebound performance earned him the MAAC tournament MVP honors. While Emmy Andujar’s 18 points and 11 rebounds helped carry the Jaspers and Donovan Kates delivered 13 points of his own. Manhattan becomes the first team to repeat as MAAC tournament champions since Siena won three straight from 2008 to 2010. Back-To-Back MAAC Titles For Masiello And Manhattan

Steve Masiello cut down the nets after his second straight MAAC title Monday night. But what a long, strange trip he took in between.

You can say what you want about Masiello, and plenty have over the last 12 months since Masiello took the head coaching job at South Florida, it was revealed he never got a degree, and the Jaspers eventually rehired him, but as far as coaching in big games, you have to say he’s been nothing short of brilliant.

Three Thoughts: Manhattan 65, Saint Peter’s 48

In the second semifinal matchup Sunday evening, Manhattan gained separation from Saint Peter’s late in the first half and pulled away late to advance to the MAAC championship game Monday evening. The Jaspers will have an opportunity to defend their conference crown as they take on local rival Iona in a game televised nationally on ESPN2. Photo Gallery: Manhattan 74, Marist 58

To close out the MAAC quarterfinals, the third seeded Manhattan Jaspers cruised past the 11th seed Marist by 16 on Saturday night. Emmy Andujar led all scorers with 24 pints and Shane Richards hit four three’s on the way to an 18 point night, while Marist senior Chavaughn Lewis made a graceful exit to his career after scoring a team-high 22 points.
