Manhattan 65, Rider 57: Jaspers Starting To Look Familiar

BRONX, N.Y. – It may have been far from beautiful, but eye of the beholder and such because all the reasons why the Monmouth, Iona, and Siena coaching staffs will be losing plenty of sleep worrying about Manhattan next month were apparent in the Jaspers’ 65-57 win over previously streaking Rider at Draddy Gym Tuesday night.

Manhattan, in particular senior Shane Richards, hit big shots down the stretch, made things difficult on the defensive end for the Broncs, and gutted out another victory to move to 6-5 in the MAAC (9-11 overall).

Monmouth: Started From The Bottom, Now They’re Here, MAAC

HAMDEN, Conn. – Set your neighborhood time machine to 2013 and the large crowd at the TD Bank Center for Quinnipiac and Monmouth on a January night in 2016 probably made some sense to you. After all, although they were never able to quite capture the NEC title, Quinnipiac was always right there and it seemed that the Bobcats’ impending move to the MAAC would only propel them to bigger and better things (and more consistent crowds).

Sure enough, a year later, Quinnipiac was doing just fine, thank you, in its new MAAC surroundings, still pummeling teams into submission, once 14-4 in the league before a late slide. Meanwhile, for King Rice and Monmouth things were, well, rough. Rice’s team hadn’t even qualified for the 2013 NEC Tournament and its 5-15 (and 11-21 overall) a year later mark might have even exceeded expectations for a program making an upward move with seemingly very little to work with.

Fairfield 98, Iona 91: A Little Redemption For Marcus Gilbert

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – It’s hard to call Marcus Gilbert unknown, especially in the MAAC, where he was a preseason first-team selection after all.

Maybe underappreciated might be a little closer to the target. Gilbert finished fifth in the MAAC with 16.1 points per game last season, and was praised by opposing coaches for his outstanding ability after almost every game, but made only the MAAC third team last March.

The primary reason isn’t hard to deduce, Gilbert’s Fairfield team finished a putrid 7-24, finishing with a lopsided MAAC Tournament loss that saw them score just 33 points. Yes, them, as in the whole team. It was Fairfield’s second straight seven-win season after the Stags went 19-16 in Gilbert’s freshman season, one that saw him on the MAAC All-Rookie Team.
