Iona freshman guard A.J. English, who has missed the last two games with a wrist injury has been ruled out for the season, head coach Tim Cluess said. Continue reading “Iona’s A.J. English Out for the Season”

Five Thoughts: Iona Hangs On Against Fairfield
Iona built an 11-point lead at halftime and hung on for an 84-73 victory over Fairfield on Friday. The Gaels are now 6-1 in MAAC play, but things aren’t quite perfect. Continue reading “Five Thoughts: Iona Hangs On Against Fairfield”
Tempo-free MAAC: One-Third of the Way Home
Now that MAAC play is a third of the way in these numbers are getting more significant, with one fun caveat. The schedules have been weighted pretty funny. Loyola (MD) and Rider have played twice. So have St. Peter’s and Loyola (MD). So have Siena and Rider. So have Canisius and Fairfield. I’m not really sure what these match ups are doing to the samples, but there’s something to it.

Tempo-Free MAAC: More Early Season Returns
The more I look at the tempo-free numbers in the MAAC, the more I wonder when people are going to start longing for the days of Iona’s dominance last season. The MAAC is going to be incredibly unpredictable this season with as many as five teams looking like legitimate contenders. Continue reading “Tempo-Free MAAC: More Early Season Returns”
MAAC Recap: Wins On The Road
A night after Fairfield won at Canisius, a few other teams went on the road and took home important victories. Both Iona and Manhattan won in opponents’ gyms to stay right in the thick of the conference race.
The Mid-Range Jump Shot Around NYC
The death of the mid-range jump shot is one of the most overwrought storylines in college hoops. Purists seem to think that it left us for good at some point and is never coming back. That’s not the case at all. It just turns out that it’s pretty inefficient to take one. Continue reading “The Mid-Range Jump Shot Around NYC”
10,000 Sims: Canisius Surprises MAAC
Coming into the season Canisius wasn’t well regarded by most human prognosticators or the computers. Everyone knew that Jim Baron was going to have a lot of talent, but how it would come together was a big unknown. Well now Canisius is the only 2-0 team after the December weekend of conference play and appears to be in the driver’s seat for conference play.
Grading the NIT Bracketologists
It’s almost time to start NIT Bracketology up again. My first bracket of the season will be coming up after the New Year, but first I wanted to look back at where we came from and if there were any lessons learned.
Christmas Week: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly MAAC Recap
Exams are over and basketball is back in full swing. With lots of MAAC action this week there was lots to pick from for this week’s good, bad and ugly categories. Apologies to Loyola (MD) and Marist. I couldn’t figure out what to write about the easy victory over Mount St. Mary’s and the Hartford loss for the Red Foxes falls under the old adage of “If you don’t have anything nice to say…”

MAAC Night In Review: Not All Losses Are Equal
While both MAAC teams in action lost last night, the results had a bit of a different feel. Iona lost to La Salle 88-74, but Gaels fans are now excited by the excellent debut of David Laury. Rider struggled at Princeton, leaving the Broncs with even more questions. Continue reading “MAAC Night In Review: Not All Losses Are Equal”
