Big Apple Buckets Weekly Awards: Feb. 3
Intra-city rivalries took center stage this week. The NEC was quite circular – St. Francis beat Wagner, Wagner beat LIU Brooklyn, while Iona grabbed the upper hand in its rivalry against Manhattan. It’s another team from the Big East though that had turned things around and wins our team of the week. Continue reading “Big Apple Buckets Weekly Awards: Feb. 3”
Iona 85, Manhattan 73
Step off the Metro North train in New Rochelle and you know you’re not in New York City anymore. There are apartment buildings, a McDonald’s, and a CVS on the main drag, but it’s nothing like the Bronx, which is just nine miles away. Continue reading “Iona 85, Manhattan 73”

Also, with so many teams showing signs of life hopefully we’re in for some excellent basketball in the NYC area during the next two months. Anyone who attended Quinnipiac’s overtime victory over Manhattan, certainly knows how exciting basketball in the city can be. Continue reading “Big Apple Buckets Weekly Awards – Jan. 27”

Sophomore A.J. English Breaking Out for Iona
Iona’s A.J. English appeared poised to breakout halfway through his freshman year, however, a broken right wrist caused him to miss the final 15 games of the 2012-13 season.
Almost one year removed from that injury, English has started every game this season and on Sunday scored a career-high 31 points at Siena, but he has said that he is still working through last season’s wrist injury.

Conference play started in earnest for the rest of New York City’s teams this week and it shows in these weekly awards. Picking a Player and Rookie of the Week was nearly impossible. These are our best guesses. Let us know if you disagree in the comments.
Iona’s Cluess wants to see Defense, Laury Improve
For a team that has endured a four game winning streak followed by a four game losing streak, the reward of a school-record 118 point performance seemed to be a great way to break out of that slump in 2014.
