Big Apple Buckets Power Poll: Jan. 2

The second Big Apple Buckets NYC Area Power Poll comes right before conference play. Non-conference play has been a little rough for almost all teams involved, which means that this poll was tough to figure out. Fourteen teams received votes, but there was a clear delineation amongst the voters. Friend of the site Jaden Daly of Daly Dose of Hoops joined our writers as part of the panel this time.

Here are the totals:

  1. Seton Hall – 39 votes
  2. Rutgers – 34
  3. St. John’s – 32
  4. Stony Brook – 31
  5. Iona – 24
  6. Fairfield – 17
  7. Wagner – 15
  8. Columbia – 8
  9. Princeton – 7
  10. LIU Brooklyn – 7

Others receiving votes: Rider (2), Army (1), NJIT (1) and St. Peter’s (1)

It’s worth noting that Iona is 81st in the Pomeroy rankings, which is one spot below Rutgers for the best in the area. The bottom of the area is an absolute mess though.

Ryan Peter’s noted this when he voted the Blackbirds 10th: “The Blackbirds don’t belong in the Top 10, but other teams like St. Francis Brooklyn, Monmouth, Rider and Manhattan have been even worse. This Top 10 list got ugly real fast, especially when LIU is 10th after losing to teams such as Lafayette, Morehead St., St. Peter’s, and Lamar.”

Of course, he could’ve considered putting the Peacocks at No. 10.

I would like to note that Stony Brook could be as high as second in these rankings. Seton Hall’s has played a Charmin soft schedule, but as Daly put it, “Kevin Willard’s Pirates may have had probably their softest nonconference schedule in program history, but they’re 11-2 with the best record in the area, so that has to count for something.”

The next power poll will come out sometime in late January!

  1. LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEW NYC POWER POLL. THE JOB AND TIME PUT IN
MAKES THIS POLL #1. I READ THE NEW YORK POST POLL COMING OUT EACH SATURDAY
BUT THAT POLL IS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS YOURS. THEY COVER ONLY NYC TEAMS WHILE YOUR POLL TAKES INTO ACCOUNT OTHER TEAMS OUTSIDE THE NYC
AREA.GREAT JOB DONE BY ALL AS RELATES TO THE POLL AND I WISH THAT THE POLL
WOULD COME OUT MORE FREQUENTLY .A THOUGHT FOR SERIOUS CONSIDERATION IS
A NYC AREA TOURNMENT AT THE GARDEN OR IN BROOKLYN INVITING 20 TO 25 TEAMS
TO BE HELD PRESEASON, POSTSEASON, OR LATE JANUARY EARLY FEBRUARY. THIS WOULD BE GREAT FOR LOCAL COLLEGE BASKETBALL FANS. THE INVITES COULD BE BASED ON YOUR POLL OR THE POST AND CERTAINLY DESERVES CONSIDERATION.
