A better way to find assists

Tracking where assists go and what types of baskets they create is becoming more and more important in college basketball analysis. Dave Ryan did a great post the other day about Scott Machado’s assists. Everyone has also seen the great graphics that Luke Winn does in his Power Rankings. This week he even went and checked for erroneous assists (see the North Carolina section). But whenever someone wants to do analysis of assists they have to go over the box score by hand. (At least I think they were.) I’m hoping to eliminate that effort.

The Mikan Drill looks at Iona’s defense

The Mikan Drill, an excellent site for breaking down strategy in college basketball, wrote about Iona’s defense this morning. Go check out how the Gaels used their 2-1-2 press and 3-2 matchup zone to stifle Western Michigan and Maryland and what some of the weaknesses could be moving forward. It’s an information read.

Quick hits from Iona’s loss to Purdue

Iona lost out on a golden opportunity to get a win versus talented, but raw Purdue team this afternoon at the 5-Hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The 91-90 defeat was especially difficult because it basically was decided by two last-season heaves. Purdue’s at the end of the first half went in, Iona’s at the end of the game was wide left.

Who’s the man? Machado vs. Glover

If you look at Iona’s tempo-free profile one thing immediately stands out: The impact that juniors Scott Machado and Michael Glover had on the Gaels’ offense. The two of them used 24.4% and 26.3% of Iona’s possessions respectively when they were on the court. For the season their shot percentages were nearly identical at 22.9% and 22.0%.

But there was a big difference in how the team played when one of them got more shots than the other.
