Manhattan’s schedule set up for fast start

Steve Masiello is taking over a tough job at Manhattan. The Jaspers went 6-25 and tied for last place in the MAAC at 3-15 last season, so it’s understandable that this season’s schedule would be a little lighter. It gives the new head coach a chance to build confidence and integrate his system under the constraints of a not impossible challenge.

Terriers preparing for a long journey

St. Francis (NY) announced its non-conference schedule today and the Terriers and head coach Glenn Braica are prepping for a long month of November on the road.

Showing the difficulty of getting a non-conference home game for a team in the NEC the Terriers will be on the road until December 19, when they play Albany. A month and a half of challenging games lay in wait in the interim.

Stony Brook successfully navigates the scheduling maze

Creating a non-conference schedule at an America East school like Stony Brook can be a trying experience. It’s tough to convince schools to come play you, especially if they think you’ll be decent. Most of the time the negotiations seem to focus on how many games your conference opponent can get avoid making the return trip.

That’s why the Seawolves’ non-conference schedule is a pretty impressive feat. While no BCS conference school will come to Pritchard Gym this season, a good number of decent mid-major teams from around the area will. Those are balanced out by some strong road and neutral non-conference games as well.

Iona to open Puerto Rico Tip-Off against Purdue

So the Gaels get a shot at the Boilermakers in Puerto Rico. It was announced today that Iona will take on Purdue in the first round of the tournament with the winner advancing to play the winner of Temple and Western Michigan. It’ll certainly be a tough game, but 2011-12 Purdue is going to look nothing like the one that was eliminated by VCU on their run to the Final Four.

Wishful thinking thanks to Schedulematic

Noted basketball stats maven Ken Pomeroy tried to solve the NCAA’s poor first week of the season by scheduling interesting, local match ups using a system he created and dubbed Schedulematic. Some of the results are really feasible, but when there’s a top mid-major team in a local area the results get a bit harder to fathom.

Fordham going to Loyola

Schedule details are leaking out and here’s another one. Fordham is going to be playing at Loyola (Ill.) to christen the Ramblers’ new athletic facility. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 26 in Chicago. In another bit of Loyola scheduling, it appears the Ramblers won’t be coming to Jersey City to return their BracketBuster game from last season with St. Peter’s, so expect to see them in 2012-13.
