HACKENSACK, N.J. – As some crazy guy who travels to college basketball games with a stuffed basketball long after it was funny once put it, Greg Herenda arrived on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson for his first Division I head coaching job to find his team had “exactly six players and zero assistant coaches”.
Less than three years later, he has FDU 40 minutes from an NCAA Tournament berth after an 80-75 NEC semifinal win over Mount St. Mary’s Saturday before a Rothman Center crowd of 1,562 that sounded much louder than that.
On Tuesday alongside Martin Hermannsson, Junior Robinson earned the first NEC Player of the Week award of his collegiate career, and deservedly so. The 5’5 sophomore was excellent in two pivotal home wins over Sacred Heart and Saint Francis University last week, averaging 23.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg and 3.5 apg while shooting 48.3% from the floor. Thursday night in front of a packed Pitt Center with 3:30 left and the Pioneers trailing league-leading Mount St. Mary’s by two, a double-teamed Cane Broome found senior Tevin Falzon wide open at the top of the key.

The first game of the NCAA tournament will feature two teams we’ve covered extensively this season here on Big Apple Buckets – Mount St. Mary’s and Albany. Both were seeded fourth in their respective conference tournaments, and yet, here they are as the last members standing for the America East and NEC.
