LIU Brooklyn 76, Central Conn. 67 – Rough Sledding For Blue Devils
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – “They’re going to beat somebody” might be the ultimate in backhanded compliments, but it’s become a common refrain for opponents of Central Connecticut the last two seasons.
There are many causes, the most prominent being the dismissal of Kyle Vinales before last season, but these aren’t encouraging times for CCSU, now 1-12 overall and 0-2 in the NEC after falling 76-67 Monday night. With no more winless teams in Division I, the Blue Devils are tied for bottom in that category, and perhaps even more concerning, rank No. 350 overall in KenPom, with only Florida A&M behind them.

Fordham 89, LIU Brooklyn 84 (OT): Rams Ready For A-10 Or Nah?
Any potential scientific experiment needs a problem statement and Tuesday night at Rose Hill, it was pretty simple to concoct one: Is Fordham good?
Of course, then you need a hypothesis, and I went with a yes, although a little hesitantly. Fordham was indeed 6-1 and went to 7-1 with a hard-fought 89-84 overtime victory over city rival LIU Brooklyn (4-3). That alone is cause for celebration on campus. After all, the Rams only won seven games total in 2010-11 and 2012-13. They won just 10 each in Tom Pecora’s other three seasons, and he was fired after posted a 44-106 mark.
It’s not only likely, but probable that Jeff Neubauer will start his Fordham career 9-1 after beating two of the worst teams in Division I, Coppin St. and Maine (Fordham’s next two games), and then could match Pecora’s high for a campaign at the Barclays Center on Dec. 22 against Boston College, some two weeks before the former Eastern Kentucky coach even makes his Atlantic-10 debut.

Three Thoughts: LIU Brooklyn 78, N.C. Central 77
For the second time in three games LIU Brooklyn survived. The Blackbirds made the necessary defensive stops down the stretch to come back from a 12-point deficit and pull out a 78-77 victory over North Carolina Central at the Barclays Center on Sunday. Jerome Frink and Martin Hermannsson Lead LIU Brooklyn Past Maine
A two-headed monster burst forth in Brooklyn on Thursday evening as the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds rode 25 points from Jerome Frink and another 23 points from Martin Hermannsson to an 84-79 victory over Maine in their home opener. Three Thoughts: LIU Brooklyn 71, Central Conn. 66
Among the many cliches used by basketball coaches is, “They’re going to beat somebody, we don’t want it to be us” when playing a struggling team. And as with all cliches, there is a modicum of truth in there.
For instance, as poorly as Central Connecticut has played and as undermanned as the Blue Devils are (without Kyle Vinales and Malcolm McMillan – who now appears to be lost for the season with a back injury), our buddies (or buddy) at KenPom put their odds of going winless in the NEC at a paltry 2.6% heading into Thursday’s game against LIU Brooklyn at Detrick Gym.

Three Thoughts: Hofstra 88, LIU Brooklyn 62
Having not seen Hofstra this season, but plenty of Niagara two years ago, it was the first chance for my eyes to adjust to Juan’ya Green and Ameen Tanksley in gold instead of purple. My memory of Green is as a pure scorer, but the numbers don’t exactly back that up. As a freshman on one of the youngest teams in the nation in 2011-12, Green scored 17.7 ppg, but he also averaged 4.5 apg and 1.9 spg.

NJIT Soldiers On; Might MEAC Be Savior?
When NJIT arrived at the WRAC in Brooklyn last Sunday, Jim Engles was greeted by an enthusiastic security guard who sauntered up to him and gave him a big handshake.
“I used to play here for LIU,” he said. “I remember what it was like to be the little guy. I played against Terry Dehere and those guys. That’s a great thing you did last week (against Michigan).”

Five minutes at the end of the first half dropped a young LIU team into a hole they couldn’t climb out of against Lehigh Saturday at the Wellness Center.
