Well, the 43rd annual Battle of Brooklyn game between St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn at the Steinberg Wellness Center Thursday night had it all.
In a game of huge importance for both teams, St. Francis Brooklyn in a three-way tie for second and LIU Brooklyn, still with hope of hosting a NEC tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday night, each brought an intensity and a desire to win that has made this rivalry between the two Division I Brooklyn schools, one of the best in the NEC if not among one of the most underrated in the nation. We recently documented the plight of Tom Moore and his offensive struggles at Quinnipiac last season, specifically the inability to shoot the ball. Well, Glenn Braica could definitely empathize with his St. Francis Brooklyn squad this season.
Unfortunately for the Terriers, just two years removed from an NEC regular season title (and one game away from removing its name forever from the “Cursed Five” teams that have never made the NCAA Tournament), are 4-17 and losers of six straight NEC games after a 55-47 loss to Mount St. Mary’s at the Pope Center Saturday.

LIU Brooklyn’s experience helped the Blackbirds grind out a victory over their borough neighbor St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, 63-58. After a three-pointer by Glenn Sanabria, his only basket of the game, the Blackbirds trailed by four with five minutes remaining but the St. Francis defense broke down the stretch to allow LIU to pull out the victory. Coaches can preach about hustle and desire all they want, and they surely will for the next three months of the college basketball season. But it’s very hard to win if you can’t shoot the basketball or score in and around the paint.
Such is the dilemma St. Francis Brooklyn and Glenn Braica have had this season, as a pretty good defensive effort went to waste in a 61-54 loss at the Pope Center to city rival Manhattan Tuesday night.
The Terriers (2-10) huffed and puffed and generally made things difficult for the Jaspers (4-8) much of the night, even grabbing a halftime lead. But once Manhattan (or more specifically, Zavier Turner) started making shots, they just couldn’t answer. A decent amount of the credit does go to the Manhattan defense, which had another solid performance and seemed to contest every shot St. Francis Brooklyn took. However, would an extra pass or shot fake at an opportune time have made the difference?

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Sometimes, we all just need a break, don’t we? College basketball teams have been going since late September, and with Christmas fast approaching, almost everyone appeared in need of some time off Wednesday afternoon at the Yanitelli Center. Saint Peter’s and St. Francis Brooklyn had plenty of will, and eventually it will go down as a solid 56-45 win for the Peacocks, who will resume MAAC play next week at 2-0, but it was far from pretty.
To be fair, when we talk about taking a little break, we’re talking about everybody. It was not the best of days for the officials. This is the time of year where it will become difficult to continue with the freedom of movement initiative as the game was marred with interesting calls, numerous lengthy reviews, and technical fouls. Neither John Dunne nor Glenn Braica are among the more demonstrative coaches around (although Dunne does have his moments, it’s usually not directed at the officials).
