With 8:46 remaining in the game Niagara’s Juan’ya Green went up for a fast break layup when he was met at the rim by Manhattan freshman Emmy Andujar who blocked the ball into the arms of Kidani Brutus. The Jaspers got the ball out on the fast break and George Beamon finished a three-point play on the other end. It was a five-point swing and the biggest sequence of a difficult 71-64 home win for Manhattan.

Friday round up: 5 wins
It was a banner day for New York City’s mid-majors last night as they rung in the New Year with style. All five schools in action pulled out victories. It was an impressive display of how far some of these young teams have developed.

Surprising Manhattan moves to 2-0 in the MAAC

Season Snapshot: Manhattan
Manhattan has adjusted well to Steve Masiello’s system thus far. The team sits at a solid 3-3 after being upset by Columbia at home on Saturday, but there is hope for a solid record in MAAC play and a .500 record overall this season. First though George Beamon needs to be 100%, because this team obviously needs him all over the court.
Saturday Round Up
Be sure to check out my recap of the Princeton-Wagner game below, but there were four other games involving area teams yesterday, including three against Big East teams. St. Francis (NY) came oh so close to scoring the first major upset of the season, but fell 75-71 in overtime to Seton Hall last night. Read more about that game and the other three contests after the jump.

Masiello wants Jaspers to never give up
Steve Masiello wants to teach his new Manhattan squad to never give up, even when they’re playing each other.
The new Jaspers head coach started the first half on the sidelines, a patient observer, content to find teaching moments in Manhattan’s annual Green & White scrimmage and have assistants lead the way, but as the White team fell behind by 17 early in the second half, he moved over to the home bench to offer some encouragement.
“I was trying to get them to buy into a ‘Never give up’ attitude,” Masiello said. “I was trying to get them understand that the game is never out of reach and they actually cut it to five and had an opportunity.”
