Stony Brook On Brink Of NCAAs Again After Upending Vermont

Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell looked like he was reenacting Kevin Bacon’s role at the end of Animal House midway through the first half of Sunday afternoon’s America East semifinal at Patrick Gym.

Ethan O’Day had just gotten a breakaway dunk of a Brandon Hatton steal to complete a 7-0 run that put the Catamounts up 23-9. One of the best crowds in all of mid-major college basketball was screaming and Pikiell’s team had already used three of its allotted five time outs, so all he could do is wave his hand and say “Go!” to his team, which they likely couldn’t have heard anyway.

Seawolves Thoughts: Hofstra 66, Stony Brook 65

Happy in eating my words on a prediction, a renewed rivalry began on Long Island Friday as Hofstra pulled out a 66-65 victory over Stony Brook thanks to Dion Nesmith’s heroics. His contested jumper, made with 1.9 seconds left, lifted the Pride over the Seawolves in their first meeting since 2008.

Three Thoughts: Stony Brook 57, Columbia 56

This game is hard to put into three thoughts, much less any after a scramble for rebounds on missed free throws created a game winning layup in the game’s final seconds. That and a missed shot in the final seconds by Columbia sealed Stony Brook’s win in the opening game of the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
