This week’s Saturday Game of the Week takes us to Rose Hill where Fordham has had a lot of success lately. The Rams have won three straight home games against Texas State, Georgia Tech and Harvard. While they lost a tough one at Massachusetts on Thursday, it served as reminder to the Atlantic 10 that Tom Pecora’s squad should be competitive in the conference this season, even if they are really young. Competitive is nice, but wins are better and that’s the opportunity that the reeling Musketeers coming to Rose Hill presents. If Fordham can pull off the upset (and to be clear, it would certainly still be an upset) the Rams will have another quality win under their belt, and maybe have another New York Times feature on the way.

What’s up with Fordham?
The Fordham Rams are starting to show some signs of life at Rose Hill. Tom Pecora’s squad is now at 7-6 on the season after defeating Georgia Tech and Harvard at home. The Rams have won four of their last five, which is a big change from the beginning of the season when the Rams won three of seven, including losses at Loyola (Ill.) and Monmouth. Fordham has shown a number of sustainable improvements moving forward. It’ll have to keep them up in order to compete in Atlantic 10 play, which starts on Thursday at Massachusetts.
Turnovers don’t tell the story of Fordham’s youth
Fordham has a young team. Tom Pecora is running out freshman and sophomores in a number of key places in the rotation. Typically when people think “youth” in college basketball it automatically equates to “turnovers,” but as the Rams’ 56-50 loss to St. John’s on Saturday in the MSG Holiday Festival proved, there’s much more to the equation.

Fordham staves off Hampton thanks to Bristol
The young Fordham Rams are still learning how to finish out basketball games, but, thanks to senior center Kervin Bristol, they escaped Hampton, 54-53, on Monday night at Rose Hill.

Looking at Fordham’s foursome
For Fordham this season is going to come down to how fast three young players can develop and make an impact. Understandably that means the offense has struggled a bit through the first four games. Tuesday night against Colgate, a 79-69 win, was the first time Fordham had cracked a point per possession on offense all season. Still, four games into the season is enough to at least start getting a feel for the young guys.
Saturday Round Up: Hofstra gets big win
Saturday was a busy day in college basketball. Besides Columbia’s win over Manhattan, full coverage of which you can find below, there were five other games on the schedule. Hofstra got the biggest win of the day, a 63-53 victory over Cleveland State, but there were some other good wins as well.
Friday Night Notes
There were three games played on Friday involving area teams. Iona, Fordham and Fairleigh Dickinson all got into the win column for the first time this season tonight. Below are some important takeaways.
Saturday Round Up
Be sure to check out my recap of the Princeton-Wagner game below, but there were four other games involving area teams yesterday, including three against Big East teams. St. Francis (NY) came oh so close to scoring the first major upset of the season, but fell 75-71 in overtime to Seton Hall last night. Read more about that game and the other three contests after the jump.
Three Questions – Fordham
As the season approaches every team has questions. This series is going to look at three key ones.
1. Can the Rams avoid finishing last in the Atlantic 10? — Fordham is 2-46 in Atlantic 10 play the past three seasons. The Rams haven’t finished higher than 12th since the 2006-07 season, when they went 18-12. Right now though a 12th place finish seems impossible (though one person is on record for it), but getting out the basement of the standings could happen.
