Albany Loss Hurts For Stony Brook, But It’s Not March Yet

It was de ja vu all over again for Stony Brook fans Monday night, many of whom were in approximately the same seat (albeit a much nicer one since Stony Brook Arena has been refurbished and rebranded as Island Federal Credit Union Arena) three years ago as the Seawolves’ shooting aim inexplicably disappeared at the worst possible time, shooting just 4-19 from behind the arc and 17-58 from the field as Vermont came in and took the America East title, 51-43. Three Thoughts On Stony Brook After Its 70-61 Win At Columbia

Stony Book picked up its fifth straight win, and second straight road win by defeating Columbia (7-6), 70-61 at Levien Gym on Tuesday night. It was the final non-conference for the Seawolves (10-6, 1-0 America East). Continue reading “Three Thoughts On Stony Brook After Its 70-61 Win At Columbia”

Three Thoughts: Stony Brook 71, Western Kentucky 61

Stony Brook picked up their first victory in the NIT Season Tip-Off, beating Western Kentucky 71-61 in front of 2,522 at Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Tuesday night. Junior Jameel Warney led the way with a characteristic double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds, while his classmate Carson Puriefoy carried the team late with a game-high 21 points and some critical steals.

In a game that saw the Hilltoppers open with a 11-1 run, then have a Stony Brook 20-2 run in the same half, the Seawolves secured the victory by making 17 of their 21 second half free throws. Here are three thoughts from the Seawolves victory over the Conference USA team, which marks their second straight season with a win over a team from that conference. Seawolves Thoughts: Hofstra 66, Stony Brook 65

Happy in eating my words on a prediction, a renewed rivalry began on Long Island Friday as Hofstra pulled out a 66-65 victory over Stony Brook thanks to Dion Nesmith’s heroics. His contested jumper, made with 1.9 seconds left, lifted the Pride over the Seawolves in their first meeting since 2008.

Here are four thoughts, from the Stony Brook side, on the defeat and what it means for the young Seawolves roster as they move forward at 1-2 on the young season. Continue reading “Seawolves Thoughts: Hofstra 66, Stony Brook 65”

Three Thoughts: Stony Brook 57, Columbia 56

This game is hard to put into three thoughts, much less any after a scramble for rebounds on missed free throws created a game winning layup in the game’s final seconds. That and a missed shot in the final seconds by Columbia sealed Stony Brook’s win in the opening game of the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. How Missed Free Throws Can Win A Game For Stony Brook

Everyone watching the first game at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena might not have known it, but down one with seconds left, they assumed the worst. Defending America East Player of the Year Jameel Warney was going to miss his final free throw with a chance to tie the game at 57. Stony Brook’s Puriefoy, Warney Ready to Lead the Way

Stony Brook has been on the brink of an NCAA tournament appearance for so many seasons. Last season, the Seawolves were minutes away. All they has to do was hold onto a lead against Albany. But SBU saw the game slip away as Peter Hooley drained a three-pointer to clinch the NCAA tournament berth.
