Midnight Madness around NYC

Tonight it all begins. Midnight Madness is here! Here’s a list of scheduled events around New York City.

In addition: Columbia is holding a Meet the Coaches event on Oct. 26 and Iona is holding its own version of Midnight Madness, Maroon Madness, on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.

If you’re curious about what other BCS programs are doing events check out CBS College Sports’ list. Check out the Mid-Majority’s Twitter feed for a bunch of ridiculously named events that the Other 24 schools are holding. Hilltopper Hysteria is a pretty awesome name for a season opening event!

Five Nights – December

As non-conference play comes to a close, a few schools are going to get an early jump on conference games as well. One of those games appears in our top five. The big event at MSG this month is the Jimmy V Classic – Missouri vs. Villanova, Marquette vs. Washington – but there’s another set of games on the schedule at The Garden that makes this list as well.

Five nights – November

This week, as part of my preseason coverage, I’m going to take a look at some key games coming up in 2011-12. It just so happens that there are five months in the college basketball calendar, so this works out perfectly. While there are plenty awesome games in November at Madison Square Garden – the Champions Classic Nov. 15 and the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer on Nov. 17, here are some local mid-major games worth checking out.

New York Power Rankings – Preseason Edition

There are a bunch of teams in and around the New York City area. What better way to get a handle on them by putting them into your classic power ranking? That means that every team that plays Division I basketball in New Jersey is also included along with a few Connecticut teams. Let me know if you think I’ve missed anyone. From now on these will get updated every Wednesday and contain a little feature at the top instead of this boring explanatory blurb. Away we go…

Hurley building something at Wagner

Besides a one-year blip during the 2007-08 season Wagner hasn’t had a record above .500 in Northeast Conference since 2004-05 season. The Seahawks have had just two winning seasons since 2002-03. But Dan Hurley is doing his best to change all that.

The commitment of 2012 forward Eric Fanning to Wagner on Monday continues a strong uptick in recruiting. (Highlight videos are here and here.)

Updates to NEC and Ivy League value added posts

The best part about the internet is that people keep building on the work that others are doing. Today on Cracked Sidewalks is a post about predicting the future using value add and there’s a lot there you should check out. Using some of those concepts I wanted to update my posts about the NEC and the Ivy League before moving on.

Looking for games on Basketball Travelers

Unlike say college football where schedules are set years in advance, scheduling for the next season in college basketball takes place mostly on the fly once seasons have ended. One place schools can go to speed up the process is Basketball Travelers. It’s been compared to a college basketball Craigslist, but it basically is a place for schools to post if they have specifics dates or games they’re looking to fill.
