Tempo-free NEC: What to make of St. Francis (NY)

St. Francis (NY) is the surprise of the NEC season. After upsetting Robert Morris at the Sewall Center, in pretty convincing fashion, the Terriers sit tied for second place with Wagner. Both of those teams are hanging out right behind LIU Brooklyn in the traditional standings. The tempo-free standings though continue to make us wonder if this is all a mirage.

Robert Morris reels LIU Brooklyn back into NEC race

Winning at Robert Morris was going to be a difficult task for LIU Brooklyn. The Colonials are one of the more talented teams in the NEC and guard Velton Jones has been on a roll lately. It was Jones and the rest of the RMU backcourt that outplayed Jason Brickman, C.J. Garner and Michael Culpo and led the Colonials to a 75-66 win that tightened up the NEC race.

Tempo-free NEC: Bunching up

After Thursday we’ll be halfway through the NEC schedule. Right now LIU Brooklyn is sitting at the top of the standings, but four teams are tied at 6-2 and waiting for the Blackbirds to slip up. LIU and three of those teams are also bunched up at the top of the tempo-free NEC, which suggests there’s not as much separation between the teams as the Blackbirds’ two-game lead might suggest. We’ll find out coming Thursday when LIU faces another test at Robert Morris.

LIU Brooklyn still in control of NEC after win at Wagner

For a year now LIU Brooklyn has been the class of the NEC. The Blackbirds haven’t lost a conference game, regular or post season, in over a 365 days with their 73-66 win over Wagner on Saturday at the Spiro Sports Center. LIU did it the same way its gotten most of its wins this season in conference play, by dominating in the paint and getting to the free throw line.

The funny voting habits of John Feinstein

If you take a look at the “Others receiving votes” section in this week’s AP Poll you’ll find something interesting. Wagner and Iona are both in there. The Gaels received two points and Wagner one. Does voters think that the Seahawks and Gaels should be amongst the Top 25 teams in the nation? Well, one man, author and columnist John Feinstein seems to think so. He’s been using the bottom few spots on his ballot to recognize mid-majors for a while now.

Tempo-free NEC: Wagner still on top

It’s probably no surprise to observers of the NEC that Wagner continues to lead these rankings. Yes, LIU Brooklyn is undefeated, but the Blackbirds haven’t had the convincing margins that the Seahawks have had this season. As a caveat though it’s worth noting that Wagner has played the easiest conference schedule amongst the contenders. Overall, Sacred Heart has played the most difficult slate thus far and Mount St. Mary’s the easiest.

Saturday Round Up: LIU leading the NEC

Jim Ferry and the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds should send Dan Hurley and Wagner a thank you card. Thanks to the Seahawks’ win over Central Connecticut on Saturday night the Blackbirds are now sitting all be themselves in first place in the NEC. In fact, the three NYC schools in the NEC are all sitting up at the top of the standings. That’s not all that happened though. It was a busy day in college hoops.
