This week, as part of my preseason coverage, I’m going to take a look at some key games coming up in 2011-12. It just so happens that there are five months in the college basketball calendar, so this works out perfectly. While there are plenty awesome games in November at Madison Square Garden – the Champions Classic Nov. 15 and the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer on Nov. 17, here are some local mid-major games worth checking out.

New York Power Rankings – Preseason Edition
There are a bunch of teams in and around the New York City area. What better way to get a handle on them by putting them into your classic power ranking? Note: In order to be included in the power rankings a team’s campus has to be within a 65 mile radius of Manhattan according to Google Maps. That means that every team that plays Division I basketball in New Jersey is also included along with a few Connecticut teams. Let me know if you think I’ve missed anyone. From now on these will get updated every Wednesday and contain a little feature at the top instead of this boring explanatory blurb. Away we go…

Coming & Going St. Peter’s – Change is coming
St. Peter’s went to the NCAA Tournament after winning the MAAC Tournament Championship last season, but the Peacocks are going to have a lot of work to do if they want to get back. While John Dunne’s system is based mostly on defense, no team is able to easily overcome losing its top four leading scorers.

A deeper look at St. Peter’s recruiting
The Jersey Journal and NJ.com have videos and some analysis of the St. Peter’s recruiting class for 2011 on their site. If you want a further rundown on who John Dunne is bringing in check it out.
Wishful thinking thanks to Schedulematic
Noted basketball stats maven Ken Pomeroy tried to solve the NCAA’s poor first week of the season by scheduling interesting, local match ups using a system he created and dubbed Schedulematic. Some of the results are really feasible, but when there’s a top mid-major team in a local area the results get a bit harder to fathom.
Another look at Dunne’s extension
Keepin’ Track of the MAAC’s Steve Amedio does an absolutely fantastic job covering the league as a whole. His latest is about John Dunne’s new extension at St. Peter’s and I’d recommend checking it out.
John Dunne gets extension at St. Peter’s
St. Peter’s gave head coach John Dunne an extension on Thursday of last week. The contract is a reward for taking the Peacocks to the NCAA Tournament before falling to Purdue in the first round.
Dunne has proven over the past two seasons that he really understands what it takes to have a strong defensive team and the better a team plays on defense the better chance it has to win games. (Points for obviousness on that one.)
More on 2013 recruit Khalil Dukes
Khalil Dukes is one of the hottest names in the recruiting circles around New York City. He just finished his sophomore season, but now that coaches are officially allowed to contact recruits in the 2013 class he got a number of phone calls on June 15, including from a number of New York schools.
Keepin’ Track of the MAAC looks at St. Peter’s
The blog Keepin’ Track of the MAAC is spending the off season taking a look at each program and recapping the 2010-11 season. I’ve found it an invaluable resource. Today’s recap focuses on St. Peter’s and suggests the Peacocks might not be done surprising people yet, so be sure to check it out.
