Seawolves Thoughts: Hofstra 66, Stony Brook 65

Happy in eating my words on a prediction, a renewed rivalry began on Long Island Friday as Hofstra pulled out a 66-65 victory over Stony Brook thanks to Dion Nesmith’s heroics. His contested jumper, made with 1.9 seconds left, lifted the Pride over the Seawolves in their first meeting since 2008.

Here are four thoughts, from the Stony Brook side, on the defeat and what it means for the young Seawolves roster as they move forward at 1-2 on the young season. Continue reading “Seawolves Thoughts: Hofstra 66, Stony Brook 65”

America East Stock Watch: Nov. 18

The America East picked up a grand total of three wins over the season’s first four days. However, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been positive signs from some of the league’s best teams. Providence currently leads the conference standings with victories over Albany and Binghamton, if only they played in the league full time. Meanwhile, Vermont is 1-1 in the MAAC. Here is the first edition of the America East Stock Watch on who is up, down and what numbers to worry about heading into this week.

The opener of the Island Federal Credit Union was a thriller as the Seawolves got a late layup from Ray McGrew to beat Columbia 57-56. According to Ken Pomeroy’s stats, Stony Brook had at their worst an 8.8% chance of winning the game when Maodo Lo drove the lane for an uncontested layup to put the Lions up 56-51. From that point the Seawolves made up about 93% of their win probability in about a minute.

We have already outlined how Stony Brook pulled off the unlikely win and how both teams move forward in the future. Here are some photos from the Friday night contest at the $21.1 million renovated arena. Continue reading “Photo Gallery: Stony Brook 57, Columbia 56”

Three Thoughts: Stony Brook 57, Columbia 56

This game is hard to put into three thoughts, much less any after a scramble for rebounds on missed free throws created a game winning layup in the game’s final seconds. That and a missed shot in the final seconds by Columbia sealed Stony Brook’s win in the opening game of the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. How Missed Free Throws Can Win A Game For Stony Brook

Everyone watching the first game at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena might not have known it, but down one with seconds left, they assumed the worst. Defending America East Player of the Year Jameel Warney was going to miss his final free throw with a chance to tie the game at 57. Stony Brook’s Puriefoy, Warney Ready to Lead the Way

Stony Brook has been on the brink of an NCAA tournament appearance for so many seasons. Last season, the Seawolves were minutes away. All they has to do was hold onto a lead against Albany. But SBU saw the game slip away as Peter Hooley drained a three-pointer to clinch the NCAA tournament berth.

Stony Brook Looking to Succeed with Point Guard Duo

Most of the time freshman Deshaun Thrower has been thrown out on the floor against junior Carson Puriefoy in practice. The two have been running the white and red teams, respectively, as Stony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell wants to acclimate Michigan’s Mr. Basketball into the point guard role. Stony Brook Eager to Prove Their Defensive Prowess Again

Even though Stony Brook had the second best defense in America East last season it was a far cry from the Seawolves’ dominating performance in 2013-14. SBU head coach Steve Pikiell would like to get back to a stronger defensive approach, and has emphasized it throughout preseason practice.
