Five Nights – December

As non-conference play comes to a close, a few schools are going to get an early jump on conference games as well. One of those games appears in our top five. The big event at MSG this month is the Jimmy V Classic – Missouri vs. Villanova, Marquette vs. Washington – but there’s another set of games on the schedule at The Garden that makes this list as well.

New York Power Rankings – Preseason Edition

There are a bunch of teams in and around the New York City area. What better way to get a handle on them by putting them into your classic power ranking? Note: In order to be included in the power rankings a team’s campus has to be within a 65 mile radius of Manhattan according to Google Maps. That means that every team that plays Division I basketball in New Jersey is also included along with a few Connecticut teams. Let me know if you think I’ve missed anyone. From now on these will get updated every Wednesday and contain a little feature at the top instead of this boring explanatory blurb. Away we go…

Coming & Going Manhattan – Starting again

After finishing 6-25 last season and tying for last place in the MAAC with Marist at 3-15, Manhattan can only go up. Steve Masiello has inherited a tough task. He needs to rebuild the team with young talent that can stick around and be part of a revival for the Jaspers. This first class might not be enough to get Manhattan immediately out of its doldrums, but hopefully the class can help spur the rebuilding movement.

Manhattan’s schedule set up for fast start

Steve Masiello is taking over a tough job at Manhattan. The Jaspers went 6-25 and tied for last place in the MAAC at 3-15 last season, so it’s understandable that this season’s schedule would be a little lighter. It gives the new head coach a chance to build confidence and integrate his system under the constraints of a not impossible challenge.

Scheduling details beginning to leak

The 2011-12 schedules are getting set and some of the details are beginning to leak. Today Manhattan announced that it’s first round opponent in the NIT Season Tip-Off will be Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. (Lenn Robbins has more and quotes from head coach Steve Masiello.)

Andy Katz’s blog has some news and notes about both Iona and Long Island’s schedule as well. It looks like it’ll be a long start to the season for the Blackbirds.

Value Added in the MAAC

Next season is shaping up to be a really interesting one in the MAAC. Out of the 10 teams in the conference six will be legitimate postseason candidates and at least three could do damage in the NCAA Tournament if they make it that far.

The first step in evaluating who might come out on top of that logjam is taking a look at returning players. Most observers think that since Iona is returning Michael Glover and Scott Machado the Gaels are the team to beat, but looking at the value added for returning players gives a different result.

Manhattan’s staff is complete

Steve Masiello rounded out his staff at Manhattan today with the signing of three new coaches to go along with the long holdover, Scott Padgett. (Whose coaching career is sort of just jammed onto the end of his Wikipedia entry.) Chris Burrows over at Chicago College Basketball has more about one of those hires, former DePaul star Rashon Burno. Good luck to Masiello, Burno, Padgett, Matt Grady and Matt Wilson as they start rebuilding the Jaspers.

Jones and Gomez highlight big day in college basketball

Two big pieces of news broke late on Monday night and both could certainly impact the 2011-12 basketball season. First, Arizona’s Lamont “MoMo” Jones is transferring from Arizona. He averaged 9.7 points and 2.4 assists in 26.7 minutes per game last season for the Wildcats. (Adam Zagoria has a bit more.)

Jones is looking to transfer back to the east coast. The early rumors are that he might find a home at St. John’s, but if he’s looking to drop down a level might Manhattan and new head coach Steve Masiello be able to offer him a comfortable landing spot that can guarantee a lot of playing time? (I think it’s a longshot, but new head coaches due tend to bring roster turnover with them.)
