Basketball got rolling this weekend and people were actually allowed to watch. Exhibitions at Long Island, Manhattan and Hofstra gave fans a glimpse of the future. Adelphi was very game against LIU and Manhattan, on back-to-back nights nonetheless, and Queens College gave Hofstra a fight before falling. All the box scores are available here, here and here. What you really want though is the tempo-free analysis after the jump.

Manhattan defeated Adelphi 74-68, here’s a number of photos from the second half of the game.
Brown big in Manhattan’s exhibition victory

Rhamel Brown is a big man in the middle for Manhattan. In just 19 minutes on Saturday he was the difference as the Jaspers handled Adelphi, 74-68, in Steve Masiello’s unofficial coaching debut.
Adelphi is giving teams around New York City fits. The Panthers lost a close game to Long Island on Friday, 74-66, and then came to the Bronx and gave the Jaspers everything they could handle for 40 minutes.

Three Questions – Manhattan
As the season approaches every team has questions. This series is going to look at three key ones.
1. How does the roster adapt to Steve Masiello’s style of the play? – Masiello is bringing the attacking defensive style that he learned under Rick Pitino as an assistant at Louisville to Manhattan. Luckily for him, the roster he inherits actually appears reasonably well suited to play that style of basketball. Players like George Beamon, Kidani Brutus and Mohamed Koita should fit right in. To prepare for the constant pressing, Manhattan has been running a lot.
Masiello wants Jaspers to never give up
Steve Masiello wants to teach his new Manhattan squad to never give up, even when they’re playing each other.
The new Jaspers head coach started the first half on the sidelines, a patient observer, content to find teaching moments in Manhattan’s annual Green & White scrimmage and have assistants lead the way, but as the White team fell behind by 17 early in the second half, he moved over to the home bench to offer some encouragement.
“I was trying to get them to buy into a ‘Never give up’ attitude,” Masiello said. “I was trying to get them understand that the game is never out of reach and they actually cut it to five and had an opportunity.”

Mike Glover picked as MAAC Preseason POY
The MAAC gave out its preseason awards on Tuesday in Springfield, MA and the Iona Gaels were the big winners. Forward Mike Glover was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year after he averaged 18.4 PPG and 10.1 RPG last season. The Gaels were also selected No. 1 in the preseason standings.
“Secret” Scrimmages
Everyone know that college basketball teams scrimmage against each other, in fact its allowed in the NCAA regulations. So why are they kept a secret? Who knows, but thankfully Jeff Goodman over at CBS put together a great list of all the ones he has heard about. I’ve handpicked the ones that matter to this blog after the jump.
Iona to get a lot of attention this season
ESPN released its entire slate of games for the 2011-12 college basketball season today. There are lots of games from the Big East, ACC, Big 12, etc. The typical tournaments are also there. But ESPN3.com especially has opened up a new door for mid-majors and a number of them are taking advantage. Iona is one team that will have a good deal of exposure this season, with a minimum of nine appearances on a variety of ESPN outlets. Get to know where you can find ESPN3 and ESPNU on your television, because all of the already scheduled games can be found there. The full list for the teams this site covers is after the jump.

Picking at the previews: Iona
Now, I hate to pick on Brian Lester after yesterday’s discussion about the NEC, but his predictions in Lindy’s for Metro Athletic Athletic Conference just left me scratching my head. Yes, Fairfield is talented, but how could anyone pick Iona third in the MAAC?
