Long Island and St. Francis (NY) have a unique bond being in the same conference and the same borough. They’ll play the Battle of Brooklyn this season at LIU on Sunday, February 12, but the preceding game just got a whole lot more interesting. The Blackbirds and Terriers will play as the second half of a double-header at Madison Square Garden on February 8.

Everyone know that college basketball teams scrimmage against each other, in fact its allowed in the NCAA regulations. So why are they kept a secret? Who knows, but thankfully Jeff Goodman over at CBS put together a great list of all the ones he has heard about. I’ve handpicked the ones that matter to this blog after the jump.
Defending NEC champion Long Island held an open practice for the media last Thursday afternoon, providing the first glimpse into the Blackbirds. Jim Ferry has to do a bit of reconfiguring this season after losing Kyle Johnson and David Hicks, but LIU is well on the way to preparing to defend its title.

ESPN released its entire slate of games for the 2011-12 college basketball season today. There are lots of games from the Big East, ACC, Big 12, etc. The typical tournaments are also there. But ESPN3.com especially has opened up a new door for mid-majors and a number of them are taking advantage. Iona is one team that will have a good deal of exposure this season, with a minimum of nine appearances on a variety of ESPN outlets. Get to know where you can find ESPN3 and ESPNU on your television, because all of the already scheduled games can be found there. The full list for the teams this site covers is after the jump.

With Midnight Madness quickly approaching, I stopped at the bookstore for an annual rite of October, college basketball preview magazines. Lindy’s and Athlon both try to cover every conference in their magazines, but sometimes the conclusions seem a little off. That’s certainly the case for Lindy’s preview of the NEC.
We’re thick into conference season by February and during a lot of weekends most of the teams around the city are on the road. There are still interesting games on the schedule though before the conference tournaments heat up in March. Here are five games worth attending.
As non-conference play comes to a close, a few schools are going to get an early jump on conference games as well. One of those games appears in our top five. The big event at MSG this month is the Jimmy V Classic – Missouri vs. Villanova, Marquette vs. Washington – but there’s another set of games on the schedule at The Garden that makes this list as well.
This week, as part of my preseason coverage, I’m going to take a look at some key games coming up in 2011-12. It just so happens that there are five months in the college basketball calendar, so this works out perfectly. While there are plenty awesome games in November at Madison Square Garden – the Champions Classic Nov. 15 and the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer on Nov. 17, here are some local mid-major games worth checking out.
There are a bunch of teams in and around the New York City area. What better way to get a handle on them by putting them into your classic power ranking? Note: In order to be included in the power rankings a team’s campus has to be within a 65 mile radius of Manhattan according to Google Maps. That means that every team that plays Division I basketball in New Jersey is also included along with a few Connecticut teams. Let me know if you think I’ve missed anyone. From now on these will get updated every Wednesday and contain a little feature at the top instead of this boring explanatory blurb. Away we go…
