After Thursday we’ll be halfway through the NEC schedule. Right now LIU Brooklyn is sitting at the top of the standings, but four teams are tied at 6-2 and waiting for the Blackbirds to slip up. LIU and three of those teams are also bunched up at the top of the tempo-free NEC, which suggests there’s not as much separation between the teams as the Blackbirds’ two-game lead might suggest. We’ll find out coming Thursday when LIU faces another test at Robert Morris.

Monday means Awards and Polls
Monday means another week is in the books and lots of players garnered weekly awards from their respective conferences this week. Also, three local teams are in the Mid-Major Top 25.
LIU Brooklyn still in control of NEC after win at Wagner
For a year now LIU Brooklyn has been the class of the NEC. The Blackbirds haven’t lost a conference game, regular or post season, in over a 365 days with their 73-66 win over Wagner on Saturday at the Spiro Sports Center. LIU did it the same way its gotten most of its wins this season in conference play, by dominating in the paint and getting to the free throw line.

Wagner, LIU and NJIT all record conference wins
Last night was a good night for a number of New York area schools as they were able to record victories in conference games. Wagner’s victory over St. Francis (NY) sets up a battle for first place on Staten Island on Saturday night. It should be a great atmosphere.

KenPom stats observations
If you don’t subscribe to Ken Pomeroy’s site you should. Here’s a few interesting things I found while skipping through team profiles today.
Boyd and Beamon pick up weekly awards
It’s Monday and that means it’s award time! Julian Boyd and George Beamon both picked up Player of the Week awards from their respective conferences this week after leading their teams to perfect records during the week.
Tempo-free NEC: Wagner still on top
It’s probably no surprise to observers of the NEC that Wagner continues to lead these rankings. Yes, LIU Brooklyn is undefeated, but the Blackbirds haven’t had the convincing margins that the Seahawks have had this season. As a caveat though it’s worth noting that Wagner has played the easiest conference schedule amongst the contenders. Overall, Sacred Heart has played the most difficult slate thus far and Mount St. Mary’s the easiest.
Saturday Round Up: LIU leading the NEC
Jim Ferry and the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds should send Dan Hurley and Wagner a thank you card. Thanks to the Seahawks’ win over Central Connecticut on Saturday night the Blackbirds are now sitting all be themselves in first place in the NEC. In fact, the three NYC schools in the NEC are all sitting up at the top of the standings. That’s not all that happened though. It was a busy day in college hoops.
Recapping last night’s NEC action
The MAAC wasn’t the only conference with thrilling games last night. The NEC race continued with another six games and two teams are starting to emerge as the conference favorites. The surprising thing is that one isn’t Robert Morris. In the biggest upset of the night the Colonials lost at home to Quinnipiac.
Tempo-free NEC: The battle at the top
The NEC is supposed to be a dogfight at the top and through four conference games that’s exactly what’s happening. Central Connecticut State, Robert Morris, Wagner and Long Island Brooklyn are sitting atop the conference with the only losses amongst those four teams being to each other. (Wagner lost at LIU, RMU lost at CCSU). The tempo-free numbers tell a similar story, but a surprising team is on top.
