Thankfully it’s too early to even start thinking about at-large berths to the NCAA Tournament. Even after Iona’s difficult 82-63 loss at Marshall the Gaels are still the MAAC favorite. If something was to happen in the tournament then all bets would be off.

Three thoughts from Iona’s OT win
Iona pulled out an overtime win at Denver on Wednesday night, 80-78. The dramatic win came from a Gaels team that played in a difficult environment against a talented team. Still, Tim Cluess’ team moves to 7-1 and (spoiler alert) will be No. 1 when the new New York City Power Poll comes out this afternoon. Here are three other thoughts from the game.
Q&A with Mile High Mids before Iona vs. Denver
Iona and Denver have a big game tonight as the Gaels and Pioneers battle for the title of “Hot Early Season Mid-Major Team”. Yeah, I don’t think that’s a real title either, but it’s going to be a really good game. I asked Brendan Loy of Mile High Mids (@MileHighMids on Twitter) to give us some insights into DU before the game tonight.

Tempo-free MAAC: First weekend
Each week during the conference season I’m going to be taking a tempo-free look at the MAAC. (Here’s more about the ideas behind it.) There’s only two games in this set, but you’ll be interested in the standings nonetheless. Who is looking good through two games?
A better way to find assists
Tracking where assists go and what types of baskets they create is becoming more and more important in college basketball analysis. Dave Ryan did a great post the other day about Scott Machado’s assists. Everyone has also seen the great graphics that Luke Winn does in his Power Rankings. This week he even went and checked for erroneous assists (see the North Carolina section). But whenever someone wants to do analysis of assists they have to go over the box score by hand. (At least I think they were.) I’m hoping to eliminate that effort.
Big Friday night with three winners
Last night three teams were in action and all three won! It was a good night for MAAC openers and Columbia playing on the West Coast. A whole bunch more teams are in action today in an absolutely loaded slate of college basketball games in general.
Iona and Manhattan start MAAC play tonight
MAAC play started last night with St. Peter’s defeated Siena and Loyola (Md.) taking down Marist. It continues tonight with three games, including Manhattan at Rider and Iona at Canisius. Here are some things to watch for tonight.

Dribble Handoffs: End of November
The first month of college basketball season is coming to an end, but that means the information available is just heating up. Lots of great stuff is being written about all the teams in the area.
The Mikan Drill looks at Iona’s defense
The Mikan Drill, an excellent site for breaking down strategy in college basketball, wrote about Iona’s defense this morning. Go check out how the Gaels used their 2-1-2 press and 3-2 matchup zone to stifle Western Michigan and Maryland and what some of the weaknesses could be moving forward. It’s an information read.
Note: Scott Machado was featured, Iona received a shout out and the Purdue loss was included in the games of the week in Ballin’ is a Habit’s Week in Review.
Sunday Wrap Up: Iona crushes Maryland
It was a really good day for the New York area teams as every single one won. Three of the games were blowouts. Here are a few notes from each of the games.
