After defeating Liberty at home on Tuesday night Iona has a quick turnaround for its game against La Salle on Thursday. The Gaels will be traveling to Philadelphia to take on the Explorers who are 6-2. The losses are to Central Connecticut and Bucknell. This will be a tricky one for Iona because of the quick turnaround, but it also potentially marks the beginning of David Laury’s time with the Gaels.

All-Conference Teams According to Value Add
Now that John Pudner has given us a look at why Low-Major Value Add can be a useful way of comparing players at that level I wanted to take a look at the all-conference teams according to the metric thus far this season. There aren’t that many surprises, but using data through last Thursday’s games, here’s what the teams would look like. The data should be up soon on the Low-Major page of Value Add shortly.

The Early Season Tempo-Free MAAC
Conference play arrives a little early for the MAAC as the December weekend helps fit in the 18-game round-robin format. The good news is that these games really matter. The bad news is that two games, while a ninth of the conference slate is still a pretty small sample. What teams looked good? Here are the tempo-free rankings. Iona’s Big Comeback Comes Up Short
Iona trailed by just one point as Tavon Sledge lobbed the ball up to Taj Ridley. It was a play the Gaels ran all the time on the fast break last season, but as Ridley went towards the basket Rutgers’ Wally Judge swatted the ball right into the arms of Myles Mack. Inconsistent Iona Falls at St. Peter’s
From game-to-game and half-to-half inconsistency has been Iona’s Achilles heel through the first six games of a young season. The Gaels look like a MAAC contender at one moment and clueless the next. It was the same story on Wednesday night, as Iona led by 12 at halftime, but fell to St. Peter’s 64-62 in Jersey City. Continue reading “Inconsistent Iona Falls at St. Peter’s”
NYC Area Power Poll: The Early Returns
It is time. Most area teams have played at least five games and thus it is time to introduce the Big Apple Buckets Power Poll. Continue reading “NYC Area Power Poll: The Early Returns”
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly as MAAC Opens Conference Play
It wasn’t the best week in the world for the MAAC, but a small pack of teams are starting to separate themselves as legitimate title contenders as the season continues. Iona, Loyola (MD) and Fairfield look to be the class of the league right now as Manhattan has struggled against a difficult schedule. MAAC Teams Take to the Road in late November
MAAC teams have been playing plenty of road and neutral site games during the past two weeks. Siena and Iona traveled long distances to play three games in four days. Siena went to San Diego and Iona went to St. Thomas for the Paradise Jam. While Canisius, off to their best start since 2000-01, went out to the road for the first time Saturday at Stony Brook. Preview: UIC vs. Iona
The Paradise Jam tournament has already been quite eventful for Iona. The Gaels lost a heart breaking game to Quinnipiac and then shellacked Wake Forest. Now Iona will take on UIC at 5 p.m. It’s been a while since I covered the Flames in Chicago, so I asked Horizon League Hoops’ Chris Burrows to answer some questions to get ready for the game.
MAAC Big Winner on Mid-Major Saturday
When Andy Glockner picked the MAAC as in the nation during preseason, I was quite surprised. Yes, the league has depth, but that’s a pretty lofty projection. While one of the conference favorites, Manhattan, has struggled without George Beamon, six of the MAAC’s 10 members were in action yesterday and they were all victorious.
