Hofstra not taking things easy post Jenkins

After losing Charles Jenkins, the leading scorer in school history, to graduation you’d think maybe Hofstra would take things a little easier. Maybe the Pride would try and get a few games against some lower tier conference schools or play an invitational instead of a big non-conference event.

At first it seems like that’s the case. This season there’s only one major conference opponent on the schedule (Oregon State), last season there were two (North Carolina and Nebraska in Puerto Rico). Beyond that though the schedule has definitely gotten tougher, as many of the local squads Mo Cassara’s team will play this season have improved and the rest of the schedule is no slouch either.

Over/Under for Hofstra and CAA Hoops

CAA Hoops has a fun look at the over/unders for the conference’s teams on their site today. As the author of the post points out, there’s a real small difference from the #5 team (James Madison) to the #9 team (Hofstra). Should make the middle of the conference an absolute slugfest. It just so happens that JMU and the Pride are some the toughest teams to predict as well. The analysis seems to reveal four tiers of teams with the third one containing as many as six teams, if you include #10 UNC-Wilmington, so get ready for a wild season.

Most unique teams in 2011 college basketball

When looking through the team similarities one thing I wasn’t sure about was “How ‘unique’ was a team?” Is it interesting that the similarity scores are that spread out? Now the term “unique” has a lot of different definitions, but for my first pass I looked at the difference between a team and it’s top similarity score to figure out which teams were the most unique in college basketball in 2011.

Wishful thinking thanks to Schedulematic

Noted basketball stats maven Ken Pomeroy tried to solve the NCAA’s poor first week of the season by scheduling interesting, local match ups using a system he created and dubbed Schedulematic. Some of the results are really feasible, but when there’s a top mid-major team in a local area the results get a bit harder to fathom.

2011 Team Similarities: Hofstra

Hofstra appears due for a slide next season. Now, the graduation of Charles Jenkins makes that a pretty lame prediction, but the Pride outplayed their peripherals last season.

Ken Pomeroy’s “luck” metric seems to think so. Hofstra was the sixth luckiest team in basketball last season according to his metric which compares pythagorean record to actual record. Clocking in at +0.125 means Hofstra won about four more games than it should’ve.

Charles Jenkins selected by Warriors with 44th pick in NBA Draft

Congratulations to former Hofstra star Charles Jenkins for being selected by Golden State with the 44th pick in the NBA Draft. Sean Brennan of The Daily News caught up with Hofstra head coach Mo Cassara who thinks the Warriors are a “great fit” for Jenkins. The New York Post’s Zach Braziller says that Jenkins and former UConn guard Kemba Walker did things the right way and he hopes younger players follow in their footsteps. I’m convinced that Jenkins was a great pick for the Warriors and here are 5 players selected in front of him that I think Jenkins will outlast in the NBA.

Reading NBA Draft tea leaves for Charles Jenkins

When you look at NBA Draft projections around the web you start to realize how few reputable people actually do these things. A cursory Google search brings up lots of stuff by DraftExpress’ Jonathan Givony and ESPN’s Chad Ford, but you’ve got to really dig deeper to find other opinions. I tried to go around the web and find a few rankings that I thought would shed light on where Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins might be selected tomorrow night.

Player similarities: Charles Jenkins

Well, my player similarity creator has finally been finished and its test case – Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins – has been run through the ringer. With the NBA Draft coming up I thought it might be interesting to look at Jenkins’ comparables from the past 10 seasons. There are some names out there that make it seems like an NBA career is certainly possible.

Hofstra trying to get two quality transfers

Update: Momo Jones is going to Iona according to multiple reports.

I’m going to have a post about the CAA and shooting soon, but I wanted to point out this post over at Mid-Major Madness. Hofstra is in the running for two key transfers for the 2012-13 season – former UConn guard Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and former Arizona guard Lamont “Momo” Jones.

Iona has been rumored as a possible landing spot for Jones as well and it’s possible he could play in 2011-12 if he’s able to get a hardship waiver. Teams are clamoring over the former NYC product, but I think Coombs-McDaniel is actually the better player.
