Tempo-free scrimmage analysis

Basketball got rolling this weekend and people were actually allowed to watch. Exhibitions at Long Island, Manhattan and Hofstra gave fans a glimpse of the future. Adelphi was very game against LIU and Manhattan, on back-to-back nights nonetheless, and Queens College gave Hofstra a fight before falling. All the box scores are available here, here and here. What you really want though is the tempo-free analysis after the jump.

Three Questions – Hofstra

As the season approaches every team has questions. This series is going to look at three key ones.

1. Who or how does Hofstra replace Charles Jenkins? – All right, I started with the obvious one first, but this is definitely the biggest question. Jenkins had the best offensive rating the in the country last season for a player that used at least 28% of his team’s possessions. That’s high volume at high efficiency and it drove the Pride’s offense. And that offense in turn drove Hofstra to a surprisingly competitive campaign in the CAA.

Iona to get a lot of attention this season

ESPN released its entire slate of games for the 2011-12 college basketball season today. There are lots of games from the Big East, ACC, Big 12, etc. The typical tournaments are also there. But ESPN3.com especially has opened up a new door for mid-majors and a number of them are taking advantage. Iona is one team that will have a good deal of exposure this season, with a minimum of nine appearances on a variety of ESPN outlets. Get to know where you can find ESPN3 and ESPNU on your television, because all of the already scheduled games can be found there. The full list for the teams this site covers is after the jump.

Five Nights – December

As non-conference play comes to a close, a few schools are going to get an early jump on conference games as well. One of those games appears in our top five. The big event at MSG this month is the Jimmy V Classic – Missouri vs. Villanova, Marquette vs. Washington – but there’s another set of games on the schedule at The Garden that makes this list as well.

New York Power Rankings – Preseason Edition

There are a bunch of teams in and around the New York City area. What better way to get a handle on them by putting them into your classic power ranking? Note: In order to be included in the power rankings a team’s campus has to be within a 65 mile radius of Manhattan according to Google Maps. That means that every team that plays Division I basketball in New Jersey is also included along with a few Connecticut teams. Let me know if you think I’ve missed anyone. From now on these will get updated every Wednesday and contain a little feature at the top instead of this boring explanatory blurb. Away we go…

CAA Hoops picks Hofstra 10th

CAA Hoops published its conference predictions and it’s the thorough, yet fast-moving read that you’d expect. You’ll notice though that it takes quite a while to get down to Hofstra. The Pride are picked to finish 10th. I’ll have more on this later, but I think that’s awfully low. I expect Hofstra to finish solidly inside the third quartile (7-9) at the very least, and possibly in the top half of the league. It may sound like semantics, but there’s a big different between 7th and 10th. Still, highly recommended reading.

Wasting Time

As you know if you’re even a somewhat regular reader, I’ve been playing around with player similarity scores this summer. Well, Ken Pomeroy of course put his own up. They use similar theories to what I’ve been doing, but account for team strength and some other factors.

I took some time to skim through Hofstra and Charles Jenkins seems horribly underrated by his senior year comparisons, though Norris Cole does show up in his junior year. If David Imes follows a growth track similar to Darnell Dialls I think Hofstra fans will be content. Anyways, go waste some time and check it out. Obviously it has given me some ideas. Hopefully I can knock a few out!

Summer Wrap Up: New York’s Best Players According to Value Add

Basketball season is right around the corner and the Value Add metric is starting to pick up steam thanks to a jumpstart from Luke Winn. (You can see some of the work I did with earlier in the summer on this Google link.) One thing I haven’t covered though was the simple question of, “Who was the best player in New York last season?” Well, the answer shouldn’t surprise you.
