You can see my recap of Columbia’s win over Long Island below, but there were six other games of note played last night as well. Some of them came right down to the wire and a few continued some interesting trends that we’ve witnessed during non-conference play.

Tuesday Preview: Basketball all around
Tonight is a big night for college basketball in around New York City. I’ll be at the Jimmy V. Classic watching Missouri vs. Villanova and Marquette vs. Washington from Madison Square Garden, but you can catch action in Staten Island, Newark and Morningside Heights tonight. Here’s what to watch for in those three games.
Dribble Handoffs: End of November
The first month of college basketball season is coming to an end, but that means the information available is just heating up. Lots of great stuff is being written about all the teams in the area.
Season Snapshot: Hofstra
If I could give Hofstra one piece of advice it would be to shoot more threes. (Well not if I was talking to Nathaniel Lester, but everyone else.) The Pride are one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, but they underutilize the weapon to a criminal degree. Still, at 3-4 the Pride look to be right in line to fulfill expectations at the moment. Maybe they’ll be able to surprise in CAA play, but the projected eighth-place finish seems to be the goal right now.
Saturday Round Up: Hofstra gets big win
Saturday was a busy day in college basketball. Besides Columbia’s win over Manhattan, full coverage of which you can find below, there were five other games on the schedule. Hofstra got the biggest win of the day, a 63-53 victory over Cleveland State, but there were some other good wins as well.
Quick Previews for Black Friday
Everything is moving quick because it’s Black Friday. I’m going to be at Madison Square Garden to check out Syracuse, but Stony Brook and Hofstra are getting the long holiday weekend started off right.
Saturday Wrap Up: LIU’s first win
Area teams got the maximum numbers of wins they possibly could’ve on Saturday, since one was a head-to-head matchup, including Long Island’s first of the season. A little tempo-free analysis of each game is up next.
SGOTW: St. Francis (NY) at Hofstra
This week’s Saturday Game of the Week features two local teams, Hofstra and St. Francis (NY) battling it out on Long Island. The Pride are coming off a tough loss to Oregon State earlier in the week, but they started the season out by defeating Long Island. The Terriers have lost two close games by a combined 10 points, is this the game St. Francis finally gets over the hump?
Kates and Nichols win awards
The season has started and awards have started to be handed out. Congratulations to Manhattan’s Donovan Kates, who was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for his 10-point performance against NJIT, and Hofstra’s Nathaniel Lester, who was named the CAA Player of the Week after scoring 33 points against Long Island. Also, Travis Nichols, who was named the NEC’s Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for his 25-point, 14-rebound game in the overtime loss to Seton Hall on Saturday.
Lester carries Hofstra past Long Island
Nathaniel Lester is glad to be back. The 6’7″ forward missed all of last season with injuries, but he returned with a vengeance on Friday night, scoring a career-high 33 points to lead Hofstra past Long Island, 89-71 at Mack Sports Complex.
