What’s up with Fordham?

The Fordham Rams are starting to show some signs of life at Rose Hill. Tom Pecora’s squad is now at 7-6 on the season after defeating Georgia Tech and Harvard at home. The Rams have won four of their last five, which is a big change from the beginning of the season when the Rams won three of seven, including losses at Loyola (Ill.) and Monmouth. Fordham has shown a number of sustainable improvements moving forward. It’ll have to keep them up in order to compete in Atlantic 10 play, which starts on Thursday at Massachusetts.

New York Mid-Major Non-Conference Teams

Nobody is in action today as we get ready for conference play, so it’s time to look back once more and name the All-New York Mid-Major Non-Conference teams. There are a lot of talented players to pick from in the New York City area. If I left your favorite player off one of the teams below let me know in the comments. I don’t like expanding beyond two teams, even though it’s possible, because at some point you just start including everyone and I wanted to avoid that situation.

Thursday round up: Fordham first ACC win

Last night was full of surprises. Besides Hofstra upsetting Iona, Fordham also got its first ever win over an ACC opponent when Georgia Tech came to Rose Hill and left with a 72-66 defeat. That’s a great win for Tom Pecora’s bunch. They’ve got another tough one coming up though against Harvard. Here’s a full recap of the day’s action.

Atlantic 10 Projection: St. Louis’ schedule a big benefit

The Atlantic 10 has a lot of good teams in it. In fact, half the league (7 teams) are ranked in the top 100 of Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. They range from St. Louis at #13 to St. Bonaventure at #86. This means that the 16-game league schedule will be a particularly grueling gauntlet for most teams. Here’s the thing though, a 16-game league schedule with 14 teams means that someone is going to get some breaks. It just so happens that St. Louis is one of those teams.

Interesting reading

Two things you should check out: Dan Hanner at Real GM taking a look at teams that play a lot of freshmen and ones that don’t. Fordham is a good example of the former and Iona one of the best examples of the latter. Iona has one freshman on the roster, Josh Gomez. He’s played in six games and 10 minutes total. The other post to check out is Cracked Sidewalks’ update of Value Add. The list of the Top 100 includes Scott Machado of Iona (#36) and Tyler Murray of Wagner (#65). I’d expect to see Iona’s Mike Glover in the Top 100 soon as well.

Thursday Round Up / Friday Previews

Fordham and Hofstra both got wins on Thursday and NJIT even threw a pre-Christmas scare into a young Rutgers team. For the Rams and Pride the wins were solid bounce backs from losses and provide jumping off points for some more challenging games on the horizon. Also, there’s three teams in action tonight as Manhattan takes on George Mason, Wagner is at #13 Pittsburgh and St. Francis (NY) hosts Norfolk State.

Could Fordham escape the A-10 cellar?

For the past three seasons Fordham has finished last in the Atlantic 10. The Rams won a combined two games during the 2008-09 season through the 2010-11 season. Tom Pecora’s team is certainly improving, as seen by their win at Siena and a tough loss to St. John’s, but there is a long way to go. Still, the Rams might be able to escape the cellar this season because a new team is really struggling this season.

Turnovers don’t tell the story of Fordham’s youth

Fordham has a young team. Tom Pecora is running out freshman and sophomores in a number of key places in the rotation. Typically when people think “youth” in college basketball it automatically equates to “turnovers,” but as the Rams’ 56-50 loss to St. John’s on Saturday in the MSG Holiday Festival proved, there’s much more to the equation.

MSG Holiday Festival Live Blog!

I’m going to be live-blogging the MSG Holiday Festival that includes two of the blog’s teams (Stony Brook and Fordham) for Rush the Court starting at noon from Madison Square Garden. The Seawolves are a slight underdog against Rutgers (Ken Pomeroy’s numbers say this is a SBU home game, which it definitely isn’t). Fordham should be a big underdog against the Red Storm – around 13 points according to Vegas and Pomeroy. It’s a little surprising that the absence of Nurideen Lindsey hasn’t pushed that line down more. It should be an entertaining double-header. Feel free to chime in on the live-blog once it gets started around 11:45 a.m.

Early season grades for area teams

Since its exam break it seems like a good time to hand out some grades for each of the area teams. These grades are based on preseason expectations and there is absolutely no grade inflation here. Most teams are going to be in the C range and you’ll notice that I’ve liberally handed out a bunch of D’s as well. If you think your school deserved a better one feel free to argue in the comments. They’re listed from best to worst and I’ve also included a special one grade at the end.
