Another day, another NEC up-transfer confirmed. Sophomore forward Isaiah Still is transferring from Robert Morris to Iona. He’ll sit this season and then have two more with the Gaels.
Still was Robert Morris’s leading scorer last season, averaging 15.7 ppg. He’s a talented wing scorer who absorbed a healthy amount of possessions (26.4%) on RMU, but will probably be asked to be more team focused offensively with the Gaels.
It is also possible that Still could be a strong wing defender in the MAAC. He is athletic and will have an entire season to prepare his body for taking the step up from the NEC.
Besides preparing to make the jump from the NEC to the MAAC physically, Still should also use the offseason to work on his outside shot. He shot a respectable, but not great 33% from three last season (60-184). Also, even though he’s 6-foot-6, Still shot 43% on his two-point attempts last season. Improving both of those numbers will help make him a more consistent scorer—especially since Still already knows how to drive to the rim and draw contact. Tim Cluess has been quite busy in the transfer market this offseason. He added Zach Lewis (UMass and formerly Canisius) and TK Edogi (Tulsa) as graduate transfers who can help the team immediately. And while Still needs to sit out a season, he can help replace Deyshonee Much in 2018-19. Cluess is great at getting key transfers he needs to continously reload the Iona program and the addition of Still, who is from Rahway, NJ, is no different.
The move from the NEC to the MAAC isn’t as big a step as some other up-transfers have taken in the recent past. Just this season Nura Zanna (Houston) and Josh Nebo (Texas A&M) have transferred to the AAC and Big 12. But as graduate transfers, both of those players could fill an immediate void. It will be interesting to see where Still’s contemporaries: Mount St. Mary’s Elijah Long, Sacred Heart’s Quincy McKnight, and Bryant’s Nisre Zouzoua end up when the offseason is all said and done.
