Saturday was a chance for a few more teams to get into the action, with 36 games in total. In particular the Northeast Conference played a number of games, and one former NEC player had a huge day.
Most Notable Game:
Georgetown 105, South Carolina Upstate 60
The Hoyas got off to a fast start thanks to 32 points from former Robert Morris forward Rodney Pryor. The graduate transfer hit six 3-points in his Georgetown debut. The Hoyas scored 68 points in the first half, which is more points than they scored in five entire games last season. Georgetown scored 1.38 points per possession, but it was partly because the Hoyas were able to beat up the Spartans inside. Pryor also shot 7-8 on two-point attempts, and the team shot 73% inside the arc.
New York Games:
None. Not a single New York area team played on Saturday. St. Francis Brooklyn plays North Carolina State and Seton Hall hosts Central Connecticut on Sunday.
The Rest of Division I:
Vermont 94, Quinnipiac 70
The new, faster Quinnipiac got off to a rough start, falling down by 18 points at the half and never recovering in a home loss to America East favorite Vermont. The Catamounts were led by freshman Anthony Lamb, who scored 23 points and grabbed nine boards in 24 minutes. Read more about the game.
St. Bonaventure 92, Saint Francis U. 82
Jamaal King scored 21 points and Josh Nebo added 11 points and nine rebounds as the Red Flash outscored St. Bonaventure by two points in the second half. Of course SFU had already fallen behind in the first half. Still, freshmen Keith Braxton (12 points) and Randall Gaskins Jr. (11 points) were both in double-figures and senior Georgios Angelou added 11 of his own. Scoring 1.08 points per possession is nice, but SBU scored 1.21 points per possession. Jaylen Adams and Denzel Gregg both scored 23 points for the Bonnies.
Notre Dame 89, Bryant 64
Nisre Zouzoua scored 19 points on 14 shots, but didn’t get a ton of help as the Bulldogs dropped their opener in South Bend. Dan Garvin grabbed 12 rebounds, but only played 25 minutes. Two freshmen, Sebastian Townes and Adam Grant, logged big minutes for the Bulldogs. Townes scored 13 points and Grant 11 in the loss. Bryant had no answer for 6-foot-8 senior V.J. Beachem. He scored 22 points in 33 minutes. Even though the Fighting Irish struggled from downtown, shooting 3-16, they still scored 1.27 points per possession.
