Hofstra’s star point guard Juan’ya Green joined one of the most exclusive clubs in NCAA basketball during Sunday afternoon’s 98-95 OT loss at James Madison.
With a free throw midway through the second half, Green scored his 1,000th point as a member of the Pride. Added to his 1,131 points as a member of the Niagara Purple Eagles between 2011 and 2013, Green became the fourth player in the history of Division I basketball to score 1,000 points at two different schools.
Green joined Joe Manning (Oklahoma City, North Texas), Kenny Battle (Northern Illinois, llinois), and Gary Neal (La Salle, Towson) in the “1,000 points at two Division I schools” club.
“The most incredible thing about this accomplishment is I don’t think of him as a scorer,” Hofstra head coach Joe Mihalich said of Green. “That’s how good of a player he is. Now we know he can score, but he’s the best passer I’ve ever been around. He’s an elite passer and he makes the team better.”
Green entered Sunday’s meeting with the Dukes just ten points shy of the milestone after a 21 point effort against UNCW earlier in the week. The redshirt senior posted nine points in the first half, but took until the 9:12 mark of the second half to achieve the record.
Along with forward Ameen Tanksley, Green made the move to Hofstra from Niagara along with Mihalich prior to the 2013-14 season. Per NCAA transfer regulations, Tanksley and Green were required to sit out that year, but have helped lead the Pride to success in the last two years.
Green finished the game against James Madison with 20 points and now sits at 2,010 for his Hofstra career. He is the 32nd player to reach the 1,000 point milestone in a Hofstra uniform.
