Hartford Rounds Out Staff With Ivo Simovic, Donnie Carr

Hartford head coach John Gallagher made his final additions to his bench for the 2015-16 season.

For a school that has remade its entire group of assistant coaches, Gallagher went abroad to make his hire of Ivo Simovic for his final assistant spot. He also hired Donnie Carr to be Hartford’s coordinator of player development.

“I couldn’t be more excited to add Ivo and Donnie to our staff,” Gallagher said in a statement. “Both bring unique perspectives to our program that will have a major impact in both the recruitment of future players and the development of our current guys. With these two, plus the staff we already have in place, I am blessed to have a staff that is among the best in college basketball in terms of basketball IQ and work ethic.”

Simovic has worked in the past for the San Antonio Spurs organization in the NBA as an assistant coach  for their summer league team. He has also worked as, most recently a coach and technical director for CB Espacio Torrelodones in Spain.

Gallagher hopes that this will give his coaching staff an advantage as they continue to scour the international market for players. The head coach entering his sixth season spent the final recruiting period of July in Europe. Sophomore John Carroll hails from Ireland and is the only European player on the current roster, but the Hawks have already made inroads in Australia.

The Hawks will also hire Donnie Carr, who previously worked with the Team Final 15U AAU team, as a coordinator of player development. Carr totaled 2,067 points over the course of a four year career at La Salle from 1996-97 to the 1999-2000 seasons.

Hartford recently added his former director of basketball operations Tom Devitt as well as Hawks alum Jaret von Rosenberg as assistant coaches. Gallagher hired Matt Mihalich, son of Hofstra head coach Joe, to be his director of basketball operations.

The Hawks finished fifth in the America East last season with a 14-16 record. Associate head coach Chris Gerlufsen joined Lamont Smith’s staff at San Diego as an assistant, but Gallagher let go of assistants Matt Blue and Bill Dooley.
