Iona, Saint Peter’s Awaiting MAAC Ruling From Altercation

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has continued to wait on issuing suspensions following the altercation between Iona and Saint Peter’s on Saturday.

When Iona head coach Tim Cluess and Saint Peter’s head coach John Dunne were asked about any results from the conference, they both said that they are preparing for the weekend’s games and haven’t heard on any possible discipline.

“Right now, as much as I know, they are still under review and we are getting ready for the next game,” Cluess said, whose team hosts Siena on Friday night on ESPNU. When asked if he thought junior guard A.J. English would be reprimanded by the league for his comment with an official, Cluess said “No comment. I think you should take a better look at the situation, though.” When asked what that meant, Cluess said “never mind, I really have no comment on it.”

English and Saint Peter’s senior Desi Washington appear to spar towards the end of the Gaels’ 68-61 overtime victory, which led to the benches clearing incident.

“It’s being reviewed by the league right now, so we haven’t we haven’t heard anything up to this point,” Dunne said. “We’re just going to go ahead and prepare for Saturday’s game the way we normally would until we hear something.”

The Peacocks host Fairfield and Siena this upcoming weekend, starting with a Saturday home date against the Stags.

When asked what his message was to the group after the game, Cluess said that his message is “really between me and them.”

The Gaels can ill afford another injury, as they are already without junior Isaiah Williams, who has been in a boot nursing a foot injury. Cluess said that there is nothing new to report on the 6’7″ junior who has missed the last five games.

“We should probably know more about a week from now,” Cluess said of Williams.

The conference said they are not commenting on the incident following Saturday’s game.
