Joyce, a transfer from Houston Baptist, averaged 9.9 points per game and averaged 3.8 rebounds per game last season. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Head coach Aki Thomas confirmed in July that the school would seek a waiver for the 6’8″ junior who is returning close to home.

The Churchtown, Maryland native graduated from Southern High School, averaged 14 points and 14 rebounds per game as a senior, and had committed to Marist as a senior until his offer was rescinded. He then spent a year at Massanutten Military Academy prior to committing to Houston Baptist.

Joyce joins Richmond graduate transfer Wayne Sparrow who will play his final season for the Retrievers.

UMBC opens the season on Friday night at Akron.
