Another week, another Power Poll. But what a week it was. A number of teams in the area made some strong moves. Also, as the injuries mount for Seton Hall – even if the news is good – the Pirates have dropped further down the rankings.
St. John’s isn’t the unanimous No. 1 team in the rankings anymore. But that’s not because the Red Storm lost to Syracuse. Any NYC area team put in a similar situation would struggle. It’s more than Princeton has been doing some spectacular things on the court lately. The Tigers were our team of the week and they’ve gotten about as high as they can go without displacing Steve Lavin’s club. We’ll see what this week brings.
It’s also worth noting that the poll voters did have the opportunity to react to Tuesday night’s results, most notably Manhattan winning convincingly at South Carolina. Yes, the Gamecocks aren’t that good this season, but any win at an SEC school team is a good one.
Without further ado, the Power Poll for Week 7:
- St. John’s – 49 (4)
- Princeton – 45 (1)
- Manhattan – 40
- Iona – 32
- Quinnipiac – 27
- Stony Brook – 26
- Seton Hall – 13
- Columbia – 13
- Fordham – 13
- St. Francis Brooklyn – 7
Others receiving votes: Rider (6 points), St. Peter’s (3 points), Monmouth (1 point)
The biggest changes from last week are Quinnipiac’s rise and Seton Hall’s fall. The Pirates lost to SPU, which is why they fell. The more interesting result is QU’s rise. The Bobcats lost to Rider in MAAC play (and the Broncs are rising), but Tom Moore’s team won at Vermont this week. That win symbolizes what this team can become and is probably why pollster are so high on QU. We’ll see if they’re able to fulfill that potential in the MAAC. Also, after winning against Canisius the Terriers are hanging onto their final spot in the poll. Home games this week against Lafayette and NJIT give them a chance to move up. Let’s hope the defense is up to the task.
