Thanks to St. John’s convincing victory over Fordham at Madison Square Garden, and a lack of relative competition lately, the Red Storm are now unanimously atop the Big Apple Buckets New York Area Power Poll. Steve Lavin’s team looks like the class of the city and has a huge game coming up on Sunday against Syracuse at MSG. The result of that game probably won’t matter much for polling purposes unless Princeton, the current number two team in the area, can go to Penn State and get a win on Saturday. Could the Tigers then top the poll? It’s not likely, but certainly possible.
New York Area Power Poll:
- St. John’s: 50 points (5 first place votes)
- Princeton: 43 points
- Iona: 40 points
- Manhattan: 34 points
- Seton Hall: 29 points
- Stony Brook: 25 points
- Columbia: 13 points
- Quinnipiac: 10 points
- Fordham: 9 points
- St. Francis Brooklyn: 7 points
Others receiving votes: Rider (6 points), Wagner (5 points), NJIT (3 points), Fairleigh Dickinson (1 point)
A home loss to Monmouth caused St. Francis Brooklyn to plummet down the rankings this week. The Terriers lost 24 points. The other big drop was Fordham, which fell 14 points after its blowout loss at the Garden. The big gainer is Princeton. The Tigers have looked like a legit challenger to Harvard in the Ivy League during the non-conference season and just beat Rutgers in New Brunswick last night. (You’ll notice the Scarlet Knights are still not receiving a vote during their six-game losing streak against Division I opponents.) Some interesting games this week are sure to shake up the rankings once again!
Surely, Monmouth should be getting some points in there, no?

As a voter (and the person who runs the poll), I personally would like to see a little more out of the Hawks before considering ranking them. Winning at SFC was a good start. Not this week, but the following week the Hawks definitely have a chance to make a splash when they play both Fordham and Wagner.

I’m surprised at how poor Fordham looked vs St. John’s.
